GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin College women’s volleyball team finished the first
half of conference play with a perfect 8-0 record defeating the Britons of
Albion College 25-11, 25-15, 25-14 on Tuesday night at Calvin’s Van Noord
Arena.
Calvin started the first set on a 7-2 run thanks to three consecutive kills
from senior outside hitter Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian),
forcing a timeout from Albion’s first year head coach Kristin Slamer. The
Knights expanded their lead after the timeout, and senior defensive specialist
Kim Start (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) served six straight points,
giving Calvin the first set victory.
Lizzie Kamp tallied six kills on seven attack attempts in the first set, good
for a .857 clip. Calvin hit .452 in the first set, while holding Albion to a
.037 clip.
Calvin mixed up its rotation in the second set. Senior Rebecca Ratkov (New
Baltimore/Anchor Bay) and sophomore Brittany Rosendale (Jenison/Unity
Christian) started set two. Albion hung around for the first ten points of the
match. Rosendale then stepped up to the service line and widened the gap to a
10-6 Knight lead. Calvin would not relinquish the lead, and won the second set
handily.
Calvin hit a blistering .429 in the second set while holding the Britons to
.111.
The Knights jumped out to a big lead in the third set off of the serve of
junior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), giving
Calvin an 8-1 lead. Briton junior middle hitter Jalyn Ingalls ran off four
straight points for Albion, forcing a timeout call from Amber Warners. Albion
could not overcome the deficit, despite getting within two points on three
different occasions. Calvin won the match clinching third set despite hitting
just a .206 clip.
Every Knight saw time on the court, and thus, Calvin was very balanced
statistically. Rietema and frehsmen Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago
Christian) led Calvin with seven kills apiece. Senior Julia Hilbrands had a
team high six blocks. Senior Kelly Gordon (Caledonia/South Christian) and
sophomore Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) scored 12 and eight
digs respectively.
Sophomore Caitlin McClorey led Albion in defeat with seven kills and hit
.429.
“It was great to see our intensity stay high even when our lineup changed,”
Warners said. “It’s great for the moral of this team to see everyone get
playing time and still see quality volleyball.”
Calvin returns to action when it hosts the Adrian College Bulldogs Friday at
Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.
