Win Streak by Women's Soccer Team Comes to an End at Hope

HOLLAND – The Calvin College women’s soccer team traveled to Holland in search
of a third straight win at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. The Flying Dutch denied
the Knights this luxury, defeating Calvin 2-0 Wednesday afternoon.
The first 15 minutes of the game were uneventful. All of the play was in the
midfield, and neither team was able to create a shot let alone a scoring
chance.
In the 21st minute, Hope junior forward Raisa Yewah broke through Calvin’s
defense on the nearside, and set a cross into Calvin’s box. A Calvin defender
attempted to clear the ball out of danger but mishit the ball, and cleared it
off the post into the Knights goal.
Ten minutes later, Hope would earn a corner kick.
This time, Hope capitalized. Again it was Yewah, heading the ball into
Calvin’s net, giving Hope a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute. Calvin put
pressure on Hope in the final minutes of the first half, but could not put one
over the goal line.
Calvin enjoyed a slight advantage in possession in the second half, but could
not get through Hope’s defense. The closest Calvin came to a goal was a shot
by junior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian) that sailed just wide.
Calvin outshot Hope in the contest 14-10, but did not put a shot on goal in
the entire game. Another big story to the game was offside. The Knights were
flagged seven times, while the Flying Dutch just once. Hope senior goalkeeper
Megan Altieri earned a shutout victory, her fourth of the year.
“We continue to learn things about he competitive nature of this year,” Calvin
head coach Mark Recker said. “We battled as a group until the final minute on
the road. That’s a positive step.”
This win for Hope (8-3-0, 4-2 MIAA) was the first over Calvin (6-3, 4-2 MIAA)
in Holland since 2003.
Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Kalamazoo Hornets at noon
at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
