Men's Golf Captures Furniture City Classic Title;
Softball Picks up Doubleheader Sweep at Trinity Christian;
Men's Tennis Defeated at Kalamazoo 7-2;
Women's Tennis Defeated at Grand Valley State 9-0
 
MEN'S GOLF
 
CASCADE - Calvin continued its strong spring campaign by taking first place at the Furniture City Classic Wednesday at the Quail Ridge Golf Club. Calvin finished the 36-hole tournament with a team score of 624 strokes, finishing two strokes ahead of second place Davenport. It marks Calvin's second tournament title of the spring as the Knights also took first place at the Sunshine Invitational during its spring break trip three weeks ago.
 
Junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the way for the Knights by capturing medalist honors with a tournament score of 146. Kuiper blazed through the first 18 holes with a round of 69 and came back with an afternoon round of 77 to finish two over par. Sophomore teammate Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind, finshing in second place in the final individual standings with a 36-hole total of 150 strokes (74-76) to finish six over par.
 
Senior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) was Calvin's next finisher at 163 (80-83) while sophomore Mark Allen had a 166 (81-85) and sophomore Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) a 187 (83-84).
 
Calvin returns to action next Monday when it hosts its own Knight Invitational at Pilgrim's Run Golf Club in Pierson, Michigan. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL - Calvin got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep at Trinity Christian College Wednesday afternoon, winning games by scores of 4-1 and 6-1.
 
In game one, Calvin (7-15) overcame a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth as junior Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) belted a three-run homer after senior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) had singled.
 
Calvin added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Prins drew a bases-loaded walk. Avila went the distance in the pitcher's circle to gain the win as she scattered eight hits and struck out two. Calvin had six hits in the win including two off the bat of freshman Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS).
 
In game two, Calvin jumped out in front early with five runs in the top of the first. Freshman Meghan Smith (Morenci/Morenci HS) collected a two-run RBI single while freshmen Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) and and Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) both had run-scoring singles in the early uprising. In the fourth, Calvin added another run on an RBI single by Prins that brought home freshman Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who had reached base on a single.
 
Calvin collected 11 hits in the victory including three from Prins. Brownlee tossed a complete-game, striking out six and walking one to pick up the victory.
 
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo in a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
 
MEN'S TENNIS
Kalamazoo 7, Calvin 2
 
KALAMAZOO - Calvin jumped out to a 2-1 lead but could not gain another point in a 7-2 loss at nationally-ranked Kalamazoo College. For the second straight year against Kalamazoo, Calvin (5-6 overall, 2-1 MIAA) grabbed two of the three doubles points but the 27th-ranked Hornets (7-9 overall, 4-0 MIAA) came roaring back to sweep all six singles flights.
 
Calvin's two points came at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Juniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Philip Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) pulled out a gutty 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles while junior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) were 8-6 winners at No. 2 doubles.
 
Calvin returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the GLCA Tournament at Oberlin College. Calvin will open the tournament on Friday with dual matches against DePauw and Ohio Wesleyan.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Grand Valley State 9, Calvin 0
 
ALLENDALE - The Calvin women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 decision at Grand Valley State Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers entered the match ranked 23rd in the most recent ITA Division II Top 25 poll.
 
Calvin drops to 4-11 overall with the loss. the Knights return to action next Monday for a conference match at Saint Mary's at 4 p.m.
