Men's Golf Third at Vic Cuiss Invitational;
Women's Tennis Defeats Olivet;
Brian DeMaagd Named MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week
MEN'S GOLF
JACKSON - Battling frigid temperatures, the Calvin men's golf team finished
third in a field of six teams at the Vic Cuiss Invitational hosted by Albion
College Tuesday afternoon at the Jackson Country Club.
Calvin posted a team score of 322 strokes with Alma taking first (313), Albion
second (316), Spring Arbor fourth (323) and Olivet and Adrian tying for fifth
(328).
Calvin's top individual was freshman James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS)
with a round of 79 that was good for seventh place. Junior Ben Kuiper (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) was next with a round of 80 that placed him in 10th place.
Sophomore Ross Ryzenga (Holland Christian HS) had an 81, freshman Jonathan Cook
(Western Michigan Christian HS) an 82 and freshman Michael Wierenga (South
Christian HS) an 83.
Competing individually, Calvin sophomore Kory Kieffer (Howell/Detroit Catholic
Central HS) added a round of 83.
Calvin returns to action tomorrow at the Furniture City Classic scheduled to
begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Quail Ridge Golf Club.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin got back on the winning track with an 8-1 victory over Olivet Tuesday
afternoon inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights are now 4-10
overall and 2-2 in the MIAA. The Knights are currently tied for fifth place in
the MIAA standings with Adrian and Saint Mary's.
Calvin got off to a quick start by sweeping the three doubles flights.
Freshmen Megan Visser (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Samantha Reitsma
(Northpointe Christian HS) were 8-3 winners at No. 1 doubles while junoir Elise
Doezema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Bethany Zoerhof (Holland
Christian HS) 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Lauren Schlagenhauf (Fort
Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran HS) and junior Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo Christian
HS) claimed an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin then clipped off five singles wins with Visser winning 6-2, 6-4 at No.
1 singles, Ipema winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Reitsma winning 6-0, 6-0 at
No. 4 singles, Doezema winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and freshman Ali Roode
(Unity Christian HS) winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Grand Valley State
University for a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin’s Brian DeMaagd its Player of the Week in women’s tennis for matches
played through April 8.
DeMaagd, a junior from Grandville (Calvin Christian HS), posted 2-1 records at
No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles for the week. He won both of his MIAA doubles
matches against Albion and Trine, and overcame a 6-1 first-set loss to post a
three-set singles victory against Albion.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 6
p.m. match.
