KALAMAZOO - A 12-hit attack allowed Calvin to gain a 7-1 win over Kalamazoo in
the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, allowing the Knights to gain
a doubleheader split and a split of the four-game weekend series.

After dropping the opener 5-4, Calvin took control in game two, scoring two
runs in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth and two more in the
sixth. Meanwhile freshman lefthander Nate Schepers (Holland Christian HS)
tossed a complete-game two-hitter to run his season record to 3-1 on the year.
Schepers struck out four batters and walked only one.

Calvin (10-12 overall, 5-7 MIAA) grabbed a 2-0 lead behind a double by senior
Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS), a run-scoring single by senior Scott
Tipton (Stow, OH) and an RBI groundout by junior Drew Vos (Grand Rapids
Christian HS). Kalamazoo came back with a run in the bottom of the second but
Calvin answered with two runs in the third as junior Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek,
CA) singled in Grant Wohl (Plymouth HS) and Cok later added a sacrifice fly to
plate freshman Grant VanPutten (Holland Christian HS).

Cok later singled in another run in the fifth and Tipton followed with a
two-run RBI single in the sixth to close out the scoring.

In game one, Calvin grabbed a 3-0 first inning lead as Tos drove in a run with
a single and Cok then ripped a two-run homer to left.

in the fourth, Calvin moved out to a 4-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by
junior Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH) that brought home freshman Dan Miedema (South
Christian HS).

Kalamazoo (10-12 overall, 4-8 MIAA) got back into the game however with three
runs in the bottom of the fourth and then took the lead in the fifth on a
two-out two-run homer by Drew Ordakowski.

Calvin threatened in the top of the seventh, placing two runners aboard but
could not score. Sophomore Jeff Victor (Holland Christian HS) took the loss for
Calvin, striking out three in five innings of work.
Cok finished 3-for-5 on the afternoon and in the four-game series, went
6-for-11 (.545) with eight runs batted in.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it travels to Adrian for a
doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Albion 3, Calvin 0
Albion 3, Calvin 1

After a pair of tough losses against St. Mary's on Thursday in its conference
opener, Calvin opened up its home portion of the conference schedule Saturday
against Albion in a doubleheader. Albion took both games from the Knights,
winning 3-0 and 3-1.

In game one, Calvin got off to a rough start as the Britons scored a run in
the top of the first on an error by the Knights defense.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore Lina Avila led of the Calvin at-bat
with a double. Freshman Sarah Weiss came in to pinch run for Avila, and on a
dropped pitch by the catcher, attempted to steal third but was tagged out. The
Knights threat would end there, and Calvin left the inning without a run.
Albion tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Avila started off the inning with another
double, this off the top of the left field fence. Avila then advanced to third
on an infield grounder as Calvin surrendered the out. A fly ball and a grounder
to the first baseman later, Calvin used up its final two outs as Albion secured
the 3-0 victory.

In game two, Albion once again jumped out to an early lead, grabbing two runs
in the bottom of the second inning. Another run in the third inning gave the
Britons a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Calvin grabbed a run on some aggressive base running
by Catherine Hilbrands, taking home on a passed ball to cut the deficit to
3-1.

In the top of the seventh, lead-off batter Lina Avila hit a ball over the left
field fence, but just foul. With two outs, freshman Trista Brownlee reached
first on a hit into right field. That would be as close as Calvin came to
scoring runs, however, as Albion made the final out and wrapped up the sweep
with the 3-1 second game victory.

“I think we're doing some little things right, we're doing some little things
wrong, and its making the difference in the games,” said Head Coach Sharon
DeKleine.

Calvin now looks forward to Wednesday when it will travel to Trinity Christian
College to face the Trolls in a pair of non-conference games.

MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Albion 1
(By Mitch Blankespoor)

Coming off of an 8-1 win against the Trine Thunder earlier in the week, the
Calvin College men’s tennis team played host to the Britons of Albion College
Saturday afternoon at Strikwerda Tennis Center. The result proved to be the
same, as Calvin knocked off the Britons 8-1 to improve to 5-5 (2-0 MIAA) on the
year.

Calvin swept the all three doubles flights. Juniors Preston Phillips and Phil
Reinkin defeated David Richter and Tucker Blake 8-3. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas
Peterson nipped Danny Frank and Bill Sessions 9-7. Jarrod Brower and Vashan
Wright defeated Brandon Kosinski and Steven Nawrocki 8-2.

All the Knights needed to do was win two of the six singles matches. They did
this and more winning five of six. Three of these matches, however, were three
set matches. DeMaagd and freshmen Tom Griffin won at first and sixth singles
despite losing the first set. Phillips lost the lone singles match for Calvin
falling to Tucker Blake 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.

“Sweeping the doubles was key just as all matches are in this conference,”
Calvin head coach John Ross said. “I thought we battled well in the singles
matches. It is always exciting to see players come back from a set down to
win.”

Calvin returns to action when it travels to Stowe Tennis Stadium to take on
the Hornets of Kalamazoo College next Wednesday.
