Track & Field Teams Open Up Outdoor Campaigns at Rhodes College Open Meet
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
MEMPHIS, TN - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened up their outdoor campaigns at the Rhodes College Open meet on Saturday. Both teams had strong performances.
On the men's side, Calvin's distance crew had a strong afternoon, most notably in the 10,000 meter run. Senior Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led the way by winning the race in a time of 30:16.42 while junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) was second (30:27.31) and senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) third 30:37.20. The performances are the top three times on the NCAA III outdoor performance list this spring. Calvin had five finishers in the top 10 as sophomore Phillip Spitizer (Kingsley, MI/Buckley HS) was seventh (32:33.09) and junior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) ninth (33:02.25).
In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake County Lutheran HS) was sixth (15:23.96).
In the mile run, junior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) was a winner, clocking in with a time of 4:14.61 while battling windy running conditions. Whittle also placed seventh in the 800 meters (1:58.01).
Junior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) had a strong day in the throwing events, winning the shot put (50-4) and placing second in the discus (150-5). Both marks put him high on the NCAA III outdoor performance list. Freshman Ben DeWaal Malefyt (Midland Park, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was seventh in the discus (130-10). In the javelin, senior Justin Kremers (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) was sixth with a throw of 165-8.
In the high jump, sophomore Matt Christians (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) was seventh (6-4). Sophomore Evert Geerlings (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) was seventh in the pole vault (14-0).
On the women's side, Calvin received a second place performance from senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:01.90 with sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was fourth (38:45.34), freshman Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) eighth (40:49.63) and sophomore Hannah Kregel (Iowa City, IA/Iowa City HS) 10th (41:43.31).
In the mile run, senior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was ninth (5:14.74).
Sophomore Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) also fought through high winds to produce a personal-best time of 1:00.72 in the 400 meters. In the 800 meters, junior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) was seventh (2:19.22) and sophomore Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) ninth (2:20.49).
Highlights in the pole vault included freshman Christina Geating (Abington, PA/Abington HS) placing sixth in the pole vault (10-0) and sophomore Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) placing third in the triple jump (34-11 3/4).
Both Calvin teams will now train for a week in Gulf Shores, Alabama, before returning to Michigan for the remainder of the outdoor season.
