Baseball Wins Three of First Four in Arizona;
Softball Drops Two on Saturday in Tucson;
Men's Tennis Defeats Grand Rapids Community College;

BASEBALL
Calvin 5, Dickinson State 3

TUCSON, AZ - Calvin opened Cactus League play on Friday. Calvin opened play
with a 5-3 win over NAIA Dickinson State and then topped Division III Norwich
14-6.
In the win over Dickinson State, senior Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe/Grosse
Pointe South HS) picked up the win to up his record to 1-1 on the year. The
lanky southpaw went five innings and struck out seven. Sophomore Cory Laster
(Ludington/Ludingto HS) later came on to pick up the save in relief. Freshman
Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 2-for-4 in the win with two
runs scored and two stolen bases.
Against Norwich, freshman Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) picked
up his first collegiate victory, striking out seven batters in six innings of
work. Freshman Ben Guilfoyle (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield East HS) and sophomore
Brent Zinn (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) also came on in relief. Senior Jake
VanAlten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored to
key the Calvin offensive attack. Freshman Dan Miedema (Grand Rapids/South
Christian HS), Johnathan VanByssum (Clarendon Hills/Timothy Christian HS) and
Spencer Schuiling (Lake Odessa/Lakewood HS) also had two hits apiece with
Miedema belting a pair of doubles and VanByssum one.
On Saturday, Calvin split a doubleheader against defending Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Hamline, winning the opener 11-10
and losing the nightcap 6-2.
In game one, Calvin was led by Van Alten and junior Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek,
CA/Berean Christian HS) who both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior
Scott Tipton (Stow, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian HS) had a triple with three
runs batted in while Cok and sophomore Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian
HS) both had triples. Sophomore Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS)
was credited with the pitching win, upping his season record to 2-0 on the
year. Junior Jack Jorgenson (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) came on to
earn the save.
In game two, Cok belted an RBI triple while Tipton had a double with two runs
batted in but it was not enought to stave off defeat.
Calvin is back in action on Monday when it takes on Wisconsin-Superior in a
doubleheader.
SOFTBALL
Gustavus Adolphus 3, Calvin 2
Trinity (TX) 9, Calvin 0
Calvin dropped its first two games in Arizona, falling 3-2 to Gustavus Adolphus
and 9-0 to Trinity of Texas on Saturday. The Knights are now 2-2 on the year.
In the loss to Gustavus Adolphus, sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley
Christian HS) belted a two-run homer to gave Calvin a 2-0 lead in the top of
the first inning. Freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS)
tossed a three-hitter but was victimized by errors as the Golden Gusties came
back to score three unearned runs to gain the win.
In the loss to Trinity, Calvin went hitless as Trinity rolled to the
five-inning mercy-rule win. Avila took the loss in the pitcher's circle.
Calvin is back in action on Monday when it faces North Central and Carthage out
of the CCIW.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Grand Rapids Community College 1
Calvin picked up an 8-1 win over Grand Rapids Community College Friday
afternoon at Calvin's Strikwerda Tennis Center. The win will not count on
Calvin's season record however as it did not come against a four-year
institution. Calvin swept all three doubles flights and five of the six singles
flights to gain the win.
Picking up singles points for Calvin were junior Brian DeMaagd
(Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) at No. 1 singles, junior Preston Phillips
(Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) at No. 2 singles, sophomore Loukas Peterson Brentwood,
TN/Brentwood HS) at No. 3 singlat No. 4 singles and senior Vashan Wright (Portmore, Jamaica/Wolmers HS) at No.
6 singles.
In doubles play, DeMaagd and Phillips were 8-2 winners at No. 1 doubles,
Peterson and Reinken were winners at No. 2 doubles and junior Jarrod Brower
(Holland/Holland Christan HS) and sophomore John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland
Christian HS) 8-6 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Orlando, Florida. The Knights will compete
in a series of matches next week in Orlando including a Monday match against
Grinnell College.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
For the third straight year, Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been
named a D3hoops.com All-American. Verkaik has been named to the D3hoops.com
All-America first team. She was also a first team selection in 2011 and a third
team choice in 2010.
Verkaik has a growing collection of post-season honors as she was named a
Division III State Farm All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association last night and a finalist for the State Farm/WBCA Division III
Player of the Year award. Last week, she was named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes
Region Player of the Year. She has also been named a Capital One Academic
All-American this winter and was a finalist for the Josten’s Trophy. She
averaged 19.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game this year for the Knights while
also blocking 128 shots, setting a new Calvin single-season record.
She helped lead Calvin to an overall record of 28-2 which included an MIAA
regular season crown and an MIAA Tournament title. Calvin also advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament.
