Verkaik Named WDIII News Player of the Year;
Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Drop Pair of Matches in Orlando;
Softball Gains Win Over Carleton - Knights on Home-Run Tear;
Baseball Picks Up Dramatic 5-4 Win Over Luther - Headed Home with 5-5 Record
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
BEAVERTON, Ore. — Calvin College junior center Carissa Verkaik has been named
the 2012 Women’s DIII News Player of the Year, the publication announced in its
April issue.
Verkaik led the Knights to a 28-2 overall record while scoring 19.2 points,
grabbing 8.8 rebounds and shooting better than 56 percent from the floor per
game. She accumulated 13 double-double performances this year, including a
35-point, 12-rebound game against Siena Heights and a 15-point, 19-rebound
effort against rival Hope. She earned Player of the Year honors in the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
“Carissa was one of the top players heading into this year and she had a
terrific season that proved she was worthy of this award,” said WDIIIN editor
Gary Rubin. “The competition was fierce this year because of the number of
quality players.”
Verkaik headlines the 2012 WDIIIN All-American team, where she was joined on
the first team by Illinois Wesleyan guard Olivia Lett, Babson’s Nicole
Wurdeman, Chicago’s Morgan Herrick and Amherst senior Caroline Stedman.
WDIIIN has named a Player of the Year every season since 1994.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches on
Monday to dip to 1-7 on the year. Calvin opened the day with a 9-0 loss to
regionally-ranked Grinnell College and then suffered a 6-3 loss to Hamilton
College later in the day.
In the loss to Hamilton, Calvin received a 7-6, 6-3 victory from Megan Visser
at No. 1 singles and a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win from freshman Ali Roode at No. 6
singles. Visser and Samantha Rietema also claimed an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline University at 9
a.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL - Calvin dropped its first two matches in Orlando, falling 6-3 to
Grinnell College on Monday and 5-4 to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Tuesday.
In the loss to Grinnell on Monday, Calvin got a win from Brian DeMaagd and
Preston Phillips at No.1 doubles but Grinnell took the next two doubles points
to grab a 2-1 lead. Phillips then posted a three-set win at No. 4 singles while
Jarrod Brower was a three-set winner at No. 6 singles including a 10-8 win a
third set tie-breaker.
On Tuesday, Calvin came up just short against the Titans of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Doubles again proved to be pivotal as Wisconsin-Oshkosh claimed wins at No. 1
and No. 2 doubles. Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles as Brower
and sophomore John Strikwerda scored an 8-0 triumph.
Singles play featured several nip-and-tuck matches. Phillips was a winner at
No. 3 singles, Loukas Peterson a winner at No. 4 singles and Vashan Wright a
winner at No. 6 singles. Oshkosh was able to pull out three-set wins at No. 1
and No. 5 singles however along with a win at No. 2 singles to gain the
one-point win.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline University at noon.
SOFTBALL
TUCSON, AZ - The Calvin softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday
afternoon, falling 7-3 to North Central and defeating Carleton College 11-3.
In the loss to North Central, sophomore Lina Avila took the loss but also went
3-for-4 at the plate including a three-run homer. Senior Marie Prins and
freshman Trista Brownlee also had two hits apiece.
In the win over Carleton, Brownlee tossed a three-hitter, striking out six and
walking none in a game limited to six innings because of the mercy-rule.
Calvin belted four homeruns in the win with Avila and freshmen Merin Cok, C.J.
Hillbrands and Nicole Weener all going deep. The homeruns for Cok, Hillbrands
and Weener were the first of their collegiate careers.
Calvin is now 3-5 on the year and returns to BASEBALL
TUCSON, AZ - Calvin closed out its spring trip to Tucson with a dramatic 5-4
victory over Luther College. Junior Jack Jorgenson connected on a two-out
walk-off single that plated junior Tyler Tos with the game-winning run.
Sophomore Cory Laster went the first four innings for the Knights on the mound
while sophomore Steve VanderMolen, freshman Nate Schepers, sophomore Jeff
Victor and senior Joe Lambers came on in relief with Lambers gaining the win.
Junior Ben Cok had a pair hits and scored two runs while Jorgenson was 3-for-4
with two runs batted in.
On Monday in a doubleheader delayed by weather conditions, Calvin dropped a
pair of games to Wisconsin-Superior, falling 9-1 and 14-4
Calvin will carry a 5-5 overall record into MIAA play later this week. The
Knights open up league play on Friday with a doubleheader at Trine scheduled to
begin at 2 p.m.
