WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Calvin 75, Siena Heights 53

ADRIAN - The Calvin women’s basketball team captured the Siena Heights
Tournament title on Saturday, defeating host Siena Heights (6-1) 75-53 Saturday
afternoon in the tournament championship game.

Calvin (5-0) led 33-6 in the first half with junior Carissa Verkaik scoring 22
of Calvin’s first 33 points. Verkaik finished the game with 35 points and 12
rebounds and moved past Eileen Boonstra and into seventh place on the Calvin
career scoring list in the process.

Freshman Kayla Engelhard added a career-high 12 points and dished out four
assists. Junior Kelsey Irwin also had nine points for the Knights who improved
to 5-0 on the year. Verkaik was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the
all-tournament team from Calvin by Engelhard.

Junior Kelsey Irwin connected on three triples for the Knights in the win,
boosting her career total to 87, moving her past Cara Mulder and into fifth
place on the Calvin career list.

Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Albion for a 7:30
p.m. contest in the MIAA opener for both teams.

MEN’ S BASKETBALL
Aquinas 69, Calvin 63

GRAND RAPIDS, MI--Calvin dropped the second game of the Grand Rapids Hall of
Fame Classic to Aquinas College by a final score of 69-63.

The Knights (3-3) opened the game with 8 straight points by sophomore Mickey
DeVries and junior Matt DeBoer. DeBoer did not stop there, putting up a total
of 13 points in the first half. However, Brett Pfahler had the answer for
Aquinas (3-6). His 17 first half points kept his team in the game.

The lead went back and forth between the two teams for most of the game. A
David Rietema layup with 4:28 left in the game put the Knights ahead 58-57.
Moments later Tom Snikkers extended the lead to 60-57 with a driving layup.
The Saints responded with back to back three point plays by Cole Moore and Zach
Eddy. Calvin never put together an answer for Aquinas' pivotal scoring
stretch.

Calvin was led in defeat by Matt DeBoer's 18 points on 8-14 shooting. Junior
Tom Snikkers was the other Calvin player in double figures. His 11 second half
points, 13 total, could not propel the Knights to victory. For Aquinas, Brett
Pfahler ended up with a game-high 21 points. Cole Moore's 12 points in the post
comlimented Pfahler's performance nicely.

For his efforts in the tournament, DeBoer was named to the all-tournament team.

The Knights look to respond next weekend as they host the CCIW/MIAA Challenge
at VanNoord Arena. Calvin takes on Carthage College at 7:30 p.m. (EST) on
Friday night and Wheaton College Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. (EST).
