WOMEN'S SOCCER
Augustana 4, Calvin 1
(Written by sports information student assistant Mark DeHaan)
Looking to change its fortunes during non-conference play, the Calvin Knights
Women's soccer team returned home for its home opener against Augustana
College.
Just over a minute into the game, it looked like the Knights could take the
early lead as they were able to put the ball into the Augustana box for a
strong opportunity, but it was kicked away. A quick counter attack by the
Vikings of Augustana resulted in a shot but that went just over the net. With
34:42 left in the first half, it was Augustana threatening again. The Vikings
put a shot on net but it was turned away by a diving Stephanie Goeldner.
Over the next few minutes the Knights began to control the ball more, and this
resulted in a shot for the strong-footed Liz Cancel. Unfortunately, the
left-footed shot went over the net, and Augustana would once again push forward
with the counter attack. With 21:41 remaining, Augustana was able to take a 1-0
lead as the ball slipped past Calvin keeper Stephanie Goeldner. The goal would
be credited as an Own Goal for Calvin. Looking to respond, the Calvin offense
was able to put numerous shots toward net during the rest of the half, but none
past the Augustana keeper as the Vikings took the 1-0 lead into half.
Coming out of the break, it was Augustana controlling the ball as it was able
to get some early opportunities. With 37:54 left in the game, the Vikings were
able to put a free kick into the box. The ball would be passed to the center
where Viking midfielder Caitlin Winkelman, who sits 10th on the Augustana
all-time scoring list, would put the left-footed shot into the net to extend
the Vikings lead to 2-0. The game would go back-and-forth for the next few
minutes before Augustana would put a shot just wide of the post with just over
25:00 left in the game.
Looking to rally, Calvin began to put pressure on the Augustana keeper, but
the Vikings were able to turn aside all the threats before adding another goal.
Running through the box, Augustana forward Taylor Navarro was able to take a
sliding shot that slipped past Calvin goalie Emily Mulder.
With 7:55 left in the game, the Knights were able to add their first goal of
the game off a free kick by Liz Cancel. Cancel, showing off her powerful left
foot all night long, put the free kick right through the Augustana wall and off
the hands of the keeper into the net for her second goal on the season. With
3:48 remaining, Augustana would add one more goal to make the score 4-1 before
time ran out.
“We are a young team. With 20 underclassmen, many of the players are still
adapting to the collegiate game,” said Head Coach Mark Recker. “We have
fabulous leaders in our upperclassmen who have been setting the tone for what
we need out of the younger players. We have to become more mentally tough and
structurally sound each game. Every game we've had more and more opportunities.
The next step of our developement is finding the pace of the game after half
time.”
The loss drops the Knights to 0-4. Calvin College will return to action this
Wednesday when they travel to Trine for its conference opener.
MEN'S SOCCER
Dominican 3, Calvin 0
RIVER FOREST, IL - In a rematch of a 2010 NCAA III Tournament contest, host

scored a goal in the closing minutes of the first half and then added two goals
in the final 10 minutes of play to seal the win.
