AURORA, IL - The Calvin men’s soccer team improved to 2-1-0 on the year with a
1-0 victory at Aurora University Friday afternoon in the western suburbs of
Chicago. Senior Brad Heethuis scored the only goal of the game, converting a
pass from freshman Dino Duratovic in the 55th minute of play.
The Knights had to fend off a late rally by Aurora in the closing minutes with
junior goalkeeper Michael Dolan making a key save with just over a minute left
in the match. Calvin held a 13-7 shots at goal advantage. Dolan went the entire
way for the Knights and was credited with six saves in collecting his first
collegiate shutout victory.
The goal by Heethuis was the 16th of his collegiate career and his 10th
game-winning goal as a collegiate player.
Calvin will face Dominican University Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (EST) in a
rematch of a 2010 NCAA III second round NCAA III Tournament game.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Saint Mary's 0
(written by sports information student assistant Mitch Blankespoor)
Notre Dame, IN -- The Calvin College women’s volleyball team came to Notre
Dame with their perfect record on the line. The Knights delivered, knocking
off the St. Mary’s College Belles in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-20,
25-13.
The first set was fairly straight forward. A balanced Knight attack put the
score at 15-10, forcing a timeout call from the Belles. Junior Jen Pluymert
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) kept her service run going expanding Calvin’s lead
to 20-11. The Belles never recovered, and the Knights closed out the first set
with ease.
The second set started out well for Calvin as it won the first four points of
the set with junior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids Christian HS) serving. St.
Mary’s would not go down without a fight in this set. Kati Schneider rattled
off a 4-0 service run of her own leveling the score. Calvin built a slim lead
at 14-10, but then surrendered six of the next eight points. This forced
Calvin head coach Amber Warners to call a timeout. The timeout proved
effective as Calvin went on to win nine of the next 13 points taking the second
set.
The third set was a carbon copy of the first. Calvin got out to a big lead
and held it. The Belles tried to halt Calvin’s surge with a single timeout
with the scoreboard reading 17-9. A service run from sophomore Kristi Zietse
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) propelled the Knights to victory.
“Give credit to St. Mary’s. They are a very scrappy team, and played very
well. That being said, we stayed composed despite having the ball come back
over and over.” Coach Warners said after the match.
The Knights used a three-pronged attack to down the Belles. Senior Rebecca
Kamp (Chicago Christian HS), senior Erin Vander Plas (Northern Michigan
Christian HS), and junior Lizzie Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) scored 13, 11, and
10 kills respectively. Those three Knights scored double digit kills while
Erin VanderPlas, Rebecca Kamp, and sophomore Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) all hit over a .500 clip. Rietema also dished out 36 assists.
Calvin also saw a number of players contribute in the back row. Senior Kelly
Peterson (Anoka HS) led the Knights with eight digs. Lizzie Kamp, Megan
Rietema, and Jen Pluymert had five digs. Freshmen Elise Biesboer (Timothy
Christian HS) added four digs. Both teams had five total blocks.
St. Mary’s was led by Kati Schneider who scored eight kills. Setter Danie
Brink led the team with 19 assists and 10 digs.
Calvin returns to action tomorrow when it plays host to the Kalamazoo College
Hornets. The match will be played at the Van Noord Arena at 1 p.m.
