Men's Golf 7th at First MIAA Jamboree
MEN'S GOLF
MARSHALL - After a weekend of finishing on top, the Calvin men's golf team slipped to the back of the pack Thursday afternoon at the first MIAA Jamboree of the year. Thursday's outing was hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club and the Knights took seventh in the eight-team field with a team score of 335 strokes. Calvin had opened its season last weekend at the (non-conference) Olivet Comet Lou Collins Invitational, winning the tournament title for the first time in school history.
Trine University took first place team honors on Thursday with a team score of 321 followed by Alma in second at 327 and Adrian in third at 328. Olivet was fourth at 329 while Hope and Albion tied for fifth at 330.
Calvin was led individually by junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 80 that was good for a sixth place tie individually. Freshman Michael Wierenga (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was next with an 84 while senior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) had an 85, junior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) an 86 and freshman James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) an 88.
John Cannon of Hope was the tournament medalist with a 78.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the second MIAA Jamboree of the year. The tournament is scheduled to be held at the Pine River Country Club with Alma serving as host.
The MIAA fall season consists of eight fall tournaments.
