Softball Drops Pair to Nationally-Ranked Scots

GAME ONE REPORT

By a score of 4-0, the Knights fell short in the first game of a double header
against MIAA foe and league co-leader Alma on Monday.
Alma got on the board early. Lead-off hitter Kelly Koenigsknecht got things
started with a single. She then stole second before Camille Dittmar’s bunt and
an ensuing error scored her.
In the top half of the second Erika Brower hit Lauren Davis home. Alma would
tally another run off a Koenigsknecht double, putting the Scots up 2-0. The
Knights’ first six batters went down in order.
Calvin recorded its first base-runner in the bottom of the third when Ashley
Oosterink looped a single to shallow right-center field. The Knights could do
nothing with it, however, stranding Oosterink at first.
Oosterink recorded the Knights’ lone two hits. She notched another single in
the bottom of the sixth after she smacked a single off the Scots’ pitcher, Tara
Leedy, and reached first safely.
Amanda Schneider drove in the game’s final run in the top of the fifth with a
single up the middle. The Knights went down one-two-three in the bottom half
of the inning.
Shelby Mast and the Knights held the Scots scoreless in the top of the seventh
but the Knights were unable to muster any offense when they took the plate.
Marie Prins, Lina Avila, and Hannah DeWeerd grounded out in order for the
Knights, concluding the game.
Leedy was credited with the win, advancing her record to 14-0. The loss
dropped Shelby Mast to 3-12.

GAME TWO

In the second half of Calvin’s twin-bill against the AlmaScots, the Knights
lost by a score of 6-1.
In the bottom of the second, Alma scored the first two runsof the game. The
Scots capitalized on aleadoff walk with a Lauren Davis triple and an Erika
Brower single.
The following inningAlma put up a three spot sparked by consecutive hits from
Rebecca Dewyse andAmanda Schneider.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Scots got on the board onceagain. Kelly
Koenigsknecht singled toleft field for her only hit of the game. Emily Ross
then doubled to bring Koenigsknecht all the around fromfirst.
The lone run put on the scoreboard for the Knights occurredin an eventful top
half of the fifth inning. Sass VanRooyen doubled to right field to get things
going. Sheeventually came around to score when freshman Shelby Sheehan advanced
to firston an error. A walk to Heather Sandersonput another runner on the
bases before starting pitcher Louise Rezmer escapedthe inning with a huge
strikeout.
Louise Rezmer got her ninth win of the season as sheimproved her record to an
impressive 9-1. Lina Avila was credited with the loss, making her record on the
mound1-7.
Alma, nationally ranked #8 and conference co-leader, was toomuch to handle for
the Knights in both games. After the game starting pitcher Lina Avila said, “I
was very proud ofthe effort our team put forth today. Weplayed our hardest and
hung with one the better teams in the country.”

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Trine University for a
3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
