MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Hope 1

HOLLAND - The Calvin men's tennis team picked up an all-important 8-1 victory
at rival Hope Tuesday afternoon to finish second in the final MIAA regular
season standings and also gain the second seed for the upcoming MIAA
Tournament. The Knights finish the MIAA regular season 5-1, one win ahead of
4-2 Hope. The Knights are also now 14-7 overall heading into the MIAA
Tournament.

Tuesday's match was played indoors at Hope's DeWitt Tennis Center as rain
showers swept through West Michigan throughout the day. Tuesday's match was
much closer than what the final outscore would indicate as three of the six
singles matches featured 7-6 tie-breaking sets. In addition, Calvin picked up a
9-8 win at No. 3 doubles behind the play of sophomore Brian DeMaagd and
freshman Loukas Peterson.

The win at No. 3 doubles was one of three doubles victories for the Knights as
senior Andrew DeVlieger and sophomore Philip Reinken picked up an 8-3 win at
No. 2 doubles while senior Roland Eldridge and sophomore Preston Phillips won
8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play, DeVlieger recorded a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles
while Eldridge was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles. DeMaagd was triumphant
6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles while Phillips was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 4
singles. Reinken also pulled out a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 6 singles.

Calvin head coach John Ross is now 6-4 lifetime against Hope. Phillips is now
14-4 overall and has an 11-match win streak in singles play. Reinken is now
12-2 and owns a nine-match win streak in singles action.

Calvin will open MIAA Tournament play on Friday against Albion in a first round
tournament match. Albion will host the MIAA Tournament this Friday and
Saturday.

BASEBALL

For the first time in his career, Calvin College senior Peter Steiner has been
named the MIAA’s Position Player of the Week in baseball. Steiner shares the
award this week with Trine’s Zach Ebersole. Steiner, a senior from Chicago,
Ill. (Glenbrook South HS), went 3-for-9 at the plate for a .333 average with
six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights swept a four-game series from
Olivet. He delivered a game-winning two-run double on Friday in a 4-2 win over
the Comets, then belted a two-run homer that was the difference the next day in
a 3-2 victory. Steiner also stole three bases and drew three walks in the
series, and pitched a complete-game victory in the 4-2 win, scattering eight
hits.

Steiner is currently matching the Calvin career mark of 25 set by Jim Deters from 2002-to-2005.

Calvin returns to action this Thursday with a doubleheader at Trine slated to
start at 2 p.m.

MORE BASEBALL

Rich Hofman - a 1966 Calvin College graduate - has built a hall-of-fame high
school baseball coaching career in the state of Florida. As a Calvin student,
Hofman was a four-year member of the Calvin baseball program, playing
underneath head coach Don Vroon.

After graduating from Calvin, Hofman spent the bulk of his high school coaching
career at Westminster Christian High School where he coached former Major
League standouts Alex Rodriguez and Doug Mientkiewicz. At Westminster
Christian, Hofman led the baseball team to eight state titles and two high
school national crowns.

He later coached at Westminster Academy and Piper High School before retiring
after 40 seasons as a coach. Hofman came out of retirement in 2010 to coach at
University School of Nova Southeastern University - marking the sixth decade he
has coached.

South Florida High School Sports.com recently caught up with Hofman and filed a
video profile of his career. The video can be found online at:
