CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP FOR APRIL 10, 2011
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams had a solid Saturday of competition as a large group of Calvin athletes compete at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational while a smaller distance group competed at the Miami University Red Hawk Invitational.
At the Miami Invitational, Calvin received an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance from junior Jodi Hoekstra in the women's 5,000 meters (17:34.61) and an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14:43.20 by junior Nick Kramer in the men's 5,000 meters. Sophomore Matt VanderRoest also had a solid time in the men's 5K, clocking in at 15:03.00. In the men's 1,500 meters, Calvin had a pair of NCAA III provisional qualifying times as sophomore Greg Whittle came in with a time of 3:52.90 while senior Alex Wrobel clocked a time of 3:53.30.
Calvin also received a season-best time of 4:42.35 by junior Kaitlin Diemer in the women's 1,500 meters while senior Gretchen Braymer took second in the women's 3,000 meters with a strong time of 10:13.00.
At the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational, senior Sarah Reasoner captured the women's discus with an NCAA III automatic qualifying throw of 150-2 while also winning the shot put with a throw of 47-6 1/2. Calvin had a strong showing in the women's discus as senior Leigha Oberle had an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 137-11 while sophomore Jen Silvestro had a season-best effort of 124-4. Silvestro was also fifth in the shot put (37-6 1/2) while Oberle was seventh in the hammer throw (119-1). Calvin also captured the women's javelin as senior Kim Wigboldy won with a throw of 117-2. Wigboldy also took fourth in the long jump with a season-best effort of 16-10.
In the women's high jump, sophomore Carissa Verkaik was third (5-1 3/4) and senior Rebekah VanDyk fourth (5-1 3/4). In the sprints, senior Rachel Boerner took first place in the 100 meter dash (12.63) while also placing third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.25). She was part of a strong Calvin contingent in the 400 meter hurdles as junior Jordan Gabrielse was fifth (1:06.43) and freshman Hillary Banning ninth (1:08.50). Banning was also third in the triple jump (33-11 1/4).
In the 200 meters, freshman Julie Busscher had a season-best time of 26.57 that was good for fourth place while freshman teammate Stephanie Bennett was sixth with a season-best time of 26.65. In the 800 meters, senior Kristen Fletcher took fourth with a season-best time of 2:20.31. In the women's 5,000 meters, freshman Nicole Michmerhuizen had a season-best time of 18:27.80 that was good for fifth place. Junior Lindsey VanderBrug also had a season-best time of 15.89 in taking fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles.
On the men's side, sophomore Kyle Jasperse had a big day, winning the triple jump with a mark of 44-9 1/2 while also showing his versatility with a throw of 128-8 1/2 in the javelin.
In the men's shot put, sophomore Aaron Meckes was third (47-11) while senior Justin Kremer was third in the javelin (153-8). In the sprints, Calvin had a good showing in the 100 meter dash as freshman Terrance Paige was sixth (11.56) and senior Clay Wielard seventh (11.60).
In the 800 meters, junior Carson Sterchi claimed a hard-fought triumph, winning wiht a time of 1:56/.32 while junior Rhett Morici was third in the 3,000 meters (8:44.76) and senior Jake Christiansen fourth (8:45.73).
In the pole vault, freshman Evert Geerlings was sixth (13-11 1/4) while frehsman Matt Christians was sixth in the high jump (6-3 1/2).
Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Jamboree scheduled for next Saturday at Adrian College.
