KALAMAZOO -- The Calvin softball team opened its 2011 MIAA campaign with a
doubleheader sweep at Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon, winning by scores of 9-1 and
8-0.

In game one, Calvin broke open a 1-1 game with a run in the fifth, two in the
sixth and five in the seventh, allowing sophomore pitcher Shelby Mast to gain
her first victory of the season. Mast (1-4) was credited with a complete-game
victory, striking out 11 and walking just one in seven innings of work. Calvin
collected 15 hits in the win led by freshman Shelby Sheehan who was 3-for-3 at
the plate with four runs scored. Senior Sass VanRooyen, freshman Lina Avila,
sophomore Bekah Kline, sophomore Ashley Oosterink and sophomore Lauren
Spoelstra all had multi-hit games.

In game two, Calvin had nine hits including a pair of homeruns - one by
sophomore Hannah DeWeerd and the other by Avila. DeWeerd's homerun was a
two-run shot in the second that gave the Knights a 2-0 lead. Avila then hit her
team-leading fourth homerun of the spring in the third, belting a two-run shot
to left that put the Knights up 4-0. Calvin then scored four unearned runs in
the bottom of the fourth and held the Hornets scoreless in the fifth to close
out the win.

Sheehan was 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Avila, DeWeerd and Oosterink
all had two hits apiece. Freshman Danae Miedema was credited with the
complete-game pitching victory, striking out three and scattering six hits.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Adrian in a conference
doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

Calvin 8, Alma 1

The Calvin’s men’s tennis team welcomed the Alma Scots to Grand Rapids on
Tuesday afternoon for their MIAA conference tennis match. The Knights defeated
Alma by a score of 8-1 to improve to 2-0 in the MIAA.

Because of weather, the match could not be played outside at Strikwerda Tennis
Center. Instead, the match was played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track
Center.

“We really wanted to play outside”, Calvin head men’s tennis coach John Ross
said. “But we adjusted and got the job done indoors.”

The Knights started off the match on a great note sweeping all three doubles
flights. Roland Eldridge and Preston Phillips beat Kace Lovejoy and Logan
Beard 8-1 at first doubles. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson defeated Zack
Kerr and Josh Gove 8-2. Jarrod Brower and John Strikwerda beat Gordon
Rumschlag and Hark Hotz 8-6.

The singles competition was much more straightforward. The first two matches
off the court were at the first and third flights. The Knights won both, and
secured that match then. Andrew DeVlieger beat Kace Lovejoy 6-2, 6-3. Brian
DeMaagd defeated Zach Kerr 6-0, 6-2. Calvin won three out of the next four
matches. The lone Alma point came from Josh Gove defeating Roland Eldridge
6-3, 7-5.

“It was good for us to win indoors on a slower surface. This win will give us
some confidence moving forward,” Ross commented after the match.

Calvin will host Davenport University Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The Knights will then take on Ohio Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. on Friday in a first
round match of the GLCA Tournament hosted by Albion College.
