In front of a capacity crowd at the Eagles Ice Arena, the Knights hockey team
emerged victorious in a clash with arch-rival Hope on Friday at Eagles Ice
Center.

Calvin defeated the Dutch by a score of 4-3 with goals from two goals from
Reed Loney, along with single goals from Jarod Balog and Ben Regts. But the
story of the night was Trevor Boardway in the net for the Knights.

Early on, Calvin was faced with five minutes of short-handed play but Boardway
was stellar between the pipes during the short-handed situation and continued
making clutch saves for the entire 60 minutes.

“Everyone worked so hard tonight. It was a total team effort,” said
Broadway.

“This is Trevor’s first year. Now that everyone’s seen him, they should come
out and watch him every game,” said Coach Mike Petrusma. “He’s such a
competitor.”

The Knights drew first blood with a Reed Loney goal. Loney found himself
undefended in front of the net and put a shot past David Nowicki to give Calvin
the lead. It didn’t take long for Hope to equalize, tying the game later in
the first period, but Jarod Balog put the Knights back on top before the first
intermission break.

Calvin opened the second period strong. Balog connected with Regts on a
pinpoint cross-ice pass. Regts took advantage of some open ice and fired a
top-shelf shot into the net, giving Calvin a 3-1 lead.

But as well as the period opened for the Knights, it closed even worse. Hope
scored two goals in the final two minutes to equalize the score at 3-3.
Both squads opened the third period strong but it was Calvin who eventually
came out on top. Reed Loney’s goal with eight minutes remaining gave the
Knights a lead, which would hold to the end of the game.

Hope was not without chances however; one shot ricocheted off the post.
Boardway continued his strong play, one on instance sprawling cross net to make
a glove save. When the final whistle sounded, it was Calvin on top, and the
Knights’ bench mobbed their keeper on the ice.

“The goaltending was probably the difference in the game,” said Petrusma. “I
also want to thank our fans. The atmosphere tonight was tremendous and I know
that gave our boys a lot of jump and an extra energy boost.”

The two teams will face off again Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Edge Ice
Arena in Holland.

Men's Basketball (CCIW/MIAA Challenge)
Wheaton 86, Calvin 64
at Carthage College (Kenosha, WI)

KENOSHA, WI - A five-minute stretch to open the second half proved to be the
undoing for the Calvin men's basketball team Friday night at the MIAA/CCIW
Challenge as the Knights suffered an 86-64 defeat to the Wheaton College
Thunder.

Calvin (3-3) trailed just 41-39 at halftime but Wheaton, ranked 21st
nationally, ripped off an 18-2 scoring run in the opening five minutes of the
second half to put the game away. Wheaton (5-1) outscored Calvin 45-25 in the
second half and finished the game with a 56.1 percent field goal clip including
52 percent (13 of 25) from three-point range. Calvin shot just 36.5 percent
overall including just 34.5 percent in the second half.

"I thought we played pretty good defense for the first 20 minutes but in the
second half, we played very individually and that came back to haunt us," said
Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "If we want to be successful,
we have to play together, particularly against a strong team like Wheaton."

Calvin was led in defeat by senior Brad Schnyders (Hudsonville/Unity Christian
HS) who tossed in 13 points off the bench while sophomore Tom Snikkers
(Jenison/Unity Christian HS) had 11 points. Wheaton junior Spencer Schultze
scored a game-high 21 points while Andrew Jahns had 17 points, Tim McCrary 13
points and Jeremy Plederer 12 points.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces Carthage - the host of the
four-team MIAA/CCIW Challenge - at 4 p.m. (EST).
