WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 76, St. Mary's 55
By Sports Information Student Assistant Andrew Knot
NOTRE DAME. IN - Calvin remained unbeaten in the MIAA with a 76-55 victory at
St. Mary’s on Saturday. The win advanced its record to 2-0 in conference and
5-2 overall.
“Any win on the road is good but this one was even more special because it was
against a really good team,” said Coach John Ross.
The Knights opened up a double digit lead in the middle of the first half and
didn’t look back. They finished the half up by 10. The deficit would never
drop below that.
Calvin began the second half on fire, scoring six unanswered points, all of
them from the paint. Ally Wolffis had four of those, en route to a career high
21 points.
The Belles did manage to string together a few runs and cut the lead to 10
points on two occasions. Calvin was up to the task, however, and clutch threes
from Leah Mattson and Kelsey
Irwin stifled St. Mary’s runs.
From there, Calvin would effectively run out the clock. The Knights only
missed once from the free throw line and shot 15-16.
“We played with a lot of guts tonight. It was a huge win for our young team
on the road,” said Ross.
That was evident in the rebounded category, where Calvin held a 50-34
advantage.
The Knights also had 10 players record 13 minutes or more.
“We got a good performance from 10 players. That’s always good to see,”
continued Ross.
Calvin returns to action on December 8 when it hosts nationally-ranked
Carthage College at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Carthage 88, Calvin 80
KENOSHA, WI - A career-high 33 points by sophomore forward Tom Snikkers were
not enough to lift the Calvin men’s basketball team to victory as the Knights
were defeated by nationally-ranked Carthage 88-80 on the second day of
competition at the MIAA/CCIW Challenge.
Ranked 18th nationally, Carthage (5-2) led 45-32 at halftime and stretched its
lead to to 16 points early in the second half before Calvin (3-4) mounted a
comeback bid. Fueled by the slashing play to the basket of Snikkers and senior
forward Brad Schnyders, Calvin pulled within two points at 80-78 with 1:51 to
play. On the ensuing possession, Malcom Kelly hit a deep triple for Carthage
with time ticking down on the shot clock and just over a minute left on the
game clock to put the Red Men up 83-78.
Carthage then connected on five free throws in the final minute to seal the
win.
Snikkers also grabbed 12 rebounds to go with his 33 points to post his first
collegiate double-double. Senior Danny Rodts also had 17 points for the Knights
while Schnyders chipped in with eight points off the bench.
Carthage was led by pre-season player of the year Steve Djurickovic with 24
points while Max Cary had 20 points and Mitch Thompson 17.
Carthage shot 49.1 percent overall including 56.1 percent in the first half.
“I was disappointed with our effort in the first half,” said Calvin men’s
basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. “We did not play with a sense of urgency,
particularly with the way we took care of the ball. I was pleased with our
effort in the second half but we need to play with a sense of urgency for two
20-minute halves rather than just one.”
Calvin held a 42-32 rebounding advantage including 20-13 on the offensive
glass.
Calvin returns to action on December 11 when it travels to Trinity Christian
College for a 5 p.m contest.
