CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOV. 10, 2010
Weekend Hockey Series Between Calvin and Davenport to Raise Research Funds for
Van Andel Institute - To Honor Memory of Calvin Hockey Alumn
HOCKEY
A two-game set between the Calvin and Davenport ice hockey teams this weekend
will have special meaning. All ticket proceeds from the two games will be
donated to the Van Andel Institute in memory of former Calvin hockey player
Bill Wondergem.
A 2008 Calvin College graduate, Wondergem passed away unexpectedly last month
at the age of 24.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and mother, Wondergem
attended Calvin College, where he was a member of the Calvin College men's
hockey team and graduated in 2008 with honors in biology. Also a graduate of
Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School, he worked as an undergraduate intern
at the Van Andel Institute before earning a Bachelor of Science from Calvin.
Following graduation, Wondergem continued his work at the Institute as an
assistant research technician in the Laboratory of Cancer Genetics and
volunteered at Spectrum Health in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. At VAI, he was
recently promoted to the position of research technician and had plans to
attend medical school.
Calvin will host Davenport Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Eagles Ice Center and
will then serve as the visiting team Saturday night when Davenport hosts Calvin
at the nearby Patterson Ice Center at 7 p.m.
Both Davenport and Calvin players will wear pink jerseys to promote breast
cancer awareness, and money will be raised through admission, chuck-a-puck
during halftime, T-shirt sales, and donations. This is the second year hosting
a Community for a Cure game for both teams; last year’s games raised a combined
total of $2,400 for cancer research at VAI.
In memory of Wondergem, the Calvin hockey team has also been wearing number
the number 19 - the number he wore as a Calvin Knight.
"The Calvin hockey team wanted to honor Bill's memory in a meaningful way and
donating the proceeds from this weekend's games to the Van Andel Institute - a
place that was near and dear to Bill and his family is very appropriate," said
Calvin men's hockey coach Mike Petrusma who also served as Wondergem's coach at
Calvin. "I would also like to thank Davenport University for its partnership in
this endeavor. It is a complete class act on their part and we are grateful for
that."
Petrusma also commented on Wondergem's life. "Bill was a wonderful young man
and a joy to coach," said Petrusma. "It is always tragic when someone passes at
such an early age but our comfort is that we know Bill's faith was in Jesus
Christ and that God has has a plan for everything, no matter what the
circumstances."
