Calvin Men's and Women's Soccer and Women's Volleyball Teams Receive NCAA III
Tournament Bids
 
MEN'S SOCCER
 
The Calvin men’s soccer team has gained a bid to the NCAA III Tournament and
will host a four-team regional this Friday and Saturday. Calvin (15-2-3) will
host Ohio Northern (17-4-1) in a first round match on Friday with Dominican of
Illinois (18-1-1) facing Thomas More of Kentucky (11-5-2) in Friday’s other
first round game.
 
Game times will be announced later.
 
Calvin is making its fourth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament, its
sixth under current head coach Chris Hughes and its 10th overall.
 
Calvin is 8-8-3 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. The Knights received an
at-large (Pool C) bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
 
A year ago, Calvin advanced all the way to the national title game before
falling to Messiah College (PA). Calvin will be facing Ohio Northern for the
first time in NCAA III Tournament play but recently played the Polar Bears in
2008, winning 1-0. Ohio Northern is making its third straight trip to the NCAA
III Tournament with the Polar Bears also advancing to the national
quarterfinals in 2008.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
 
The Calvin women’s soccer team is headed to Ohio for NCAA III Tournament
competition.
 
The Knights will face host Otterbein College (OH) in a first round NCAA III
Tournament game on Friday, November 12, at a time yet to be announced.
 
Located in the northern suburbs of Columbus, Ohio (Westerville), Otterbein
(18-0-1) will host a four-team regional that will also include Allegheny
(14-2-4) and Washington University of St. Louis (10-7-2).
 
The Calvin/Otterbein winner will face the Allegheny/Wash. U. winner on
Saturday, November 13. Calvin is making its sixth consecutive NCAA III
Tournament appearance under head coach Mark Recker and its eighth appearance
overall.
 
The Knights are 7-3-5 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play and advanced to the
national quarterfinals in 2006 and 2009. Calvin will be making its second trip
to Otterbein for NCAA III Tournament play as the Knights journeyed to
Westerville for the 2005 tournament where it tied Ohio Wesleyan 2-2 before
falling in a penalty kick shootout.
 
Calvin and Otterbein will be facing each other for the first time in NCAA III
Tournament play. However, the two teams met in an early September contest in
2009 with Calvin winning 3-0.

VOLLEYBALL
 
The women’s volleyball team has received its 20th bid to the NCAA III
Tournament.
 
The Knights were selected as an at-large (Pool C) selection earlier today and
will travel to an eight-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Wittenberg University
in Springfield, Ohio.
 
Calvin (26-4) will face Otterbein (26-6) in a first round match on Thursday.
The Calvin/Otterbein winner will advance to the second round Friday and will
face the winner of a first round match between Heidelberg (32-5) and Greenville
(26-5).
 
Other first round matches have Hope (26-4) facing the University of Chicago
(30-12) and Ohio Northern (19-12) facing host Wittenberg (30-2). In 19 prior
trips to the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin has fashioned a won-loss record of
20-21 with one national runner-up finish and two fourth place finishes.
 
Calvin will be facing Otterbein for the first time in NCAA III Tournament
play. Calvin will be making its seventh consecutive NCAA III Tournament
appearance - all under the watch of current head coach Amber Warners.
 
Start times for Thursday’s first round matches will be announced later.
