Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meet Competition at Wheaton;
All-MIAA Volleyball Teams Announced - Rebecca Kamp Named Most Valuable Player
SWIMMING AND DIVING
WHEATON, IL - The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams split dual meets on Saturday as the Calvin men defeated the host Wheaton Thunder 149-144 while the Calvin women fell to Wheaton 156.5-136.5. The Calvin men are now 2-1 in dual meet action while the Calvin women are 1-2.
In the men's competition, Calvin junior Ross Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori) had a monster day, winning the 100 freestyle (48.72), 200 freestyle (1:46.42) and 500 freestyle (4:57.17). Freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) was a double-winner, claiming wins on the one and three-meter diving boards while sophomore Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, IN) won the 100 backstroke (55.73) and 200 backstrokes (2:16.53). Sophomore Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) also had a big performance, winning the 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 52.90. In addition, sophomore Matthias Bares (Holland/West Ottawa HS) had a season-best time of 10:16.94 in winning the 1000 freestyle.
On the women's side, Calvin picked up wins in the pool from sophomore Stephanie Fox (Kentwood, MI) in the 200 freestyle (1:58.83), sophomore Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.18) and sophomore Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA) in the 200 IM (2:15.40). Freshman Elise Kauffman (Sugarland, TX) was also a winner on both the one and three-meter diving boards.
Both Calvin teams are back in action next Friday, competing in non-conference dual meets at Wayne State beginning at 6 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
The 2010 All-MIAA volleyball teams were announced at the conclusion of the MIAA Tournament Saturday afternoon and several Calvin players were honored.
Junior Rebecca Kamp highlights the lead of Calvin honorees as she has been named the 2010 MIAA Most Valuable Player. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp is receiving the award for the second time in three years. A graduate of Chicago Christian High School, Kamp led the MIAA in hitting percentage (.418), blocks-per-set (1.59), kills-per-game (4.22) and was fourth in service aces-per-set (0.38). She was also named to the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year. During the year, she was a two-time MIAA Player of the Week.
She is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by younger sister Lizzie Kamp and freshman Megan Rietema. Also a native of Orland Park, Illinois, Lizzie Kamp (Chicago Christian High School) finished fifth in the MIAA in hitting percentage (.323) and sixth in kills-per-set (3.00). She was also named MIAA Player of the Week once. She is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA first team.
A setter, Rietema is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. In addition to being named to the All-MIAA first team, Rietema has been named the MIAA Freshman of the Year. She is the fifth individual in Calvin history to receive MIAA Freshman of the Year honors. Rietema finished second in the MIAA in assists-per-set (10.83) and finished third in blocks-per-set (1.23). During the year, she was a two-time MIAA Specialty Player of the Week.
Calvin junior middle-blocker Renee DeHaan has also been named to the All-MIAA second team for the second straight year. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, DeHaan finished third in the MIAA in hitting percentage (.367) and second in blocks-per-set (1.38).
