Carly Prins Named MIAA Women's Soccer MVP - Six Receive All-MIAA Women's
Soccer Honors; Nine Members of Calvin Men's Soccer Teams Receive All-MIAA
Honors;
Starting Times for NCAA III Tournament Competition Set for the Weekend
WOMEN'S SOCCER
 
Calvin College senior Carly Prins has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable
Player in women's soccer.
 
A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Prins
is the seventh individual in Calvin women's soccer history to receive the
award. She is also the fourth Calvin fall sports athlete to be named MIAA MVP
this year as Nick Kramer (men's cross country), Jodi Hoekstra (women's cross
country) and Rebecca Kamp (volleyball) were previously so honored. Prins has
also landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the fourth consecutive year.
She is just the 12th player in MIAA women's soccer history to be named a
four-time first team All-MIAA selection.
 
A forward, Prins tied for the MIAA scoring title this fall with 17 points in
eight league games, collecting eight goals and one assist. She also scored a
pair of goals in Calvin's two-game run to the MIAA Tournament title last week.
She was also named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once this fall.
 
Prins is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by senior defensive
back Kellie Honderd, sophomore midfielder Francesca Smith and freshman
defensive back Elizabeth Drennan. All three are making their first appearance
on the All-MIAA first team.
 
A four-year starter on defense, Honderd is from Hudsonville and is a graduate
of Unity Christian High School. During the conference season, she tallied two
goals and one assist and helped anchor a Calvin defense that allowed only three
goals in eight league games. She also assisted on one of the three goals scored
by the Knights in their 3-1 victory over Alma in the MIAA Tournament finals
this past Saturday.
 
Smith is from Bloomington, Indiana. She is a graduate of Bloomington South
High School. Smith had two goals and two assists in league play this fall and
picked up an assist in Saturday's win at Alma.
 
Drennan is from St. Charles, Illinois. She is a graduate of St. Charles East
High School. Drennan has started in all 19 games for Calvin this fall and in
league play, was credited with three assists while also serving as a lock-down
defender.
 
In addition, sophomore midfielder Jillian Honderd and freshman goalkeeper
Ashton Hearn have been named to the All-MIAA second team.
 
Jillian Honderd chalked up three goals and two assists in league play this
fall. She scored the game-winning goal in a 3-0 win over St. Mary's on
September 29. She then scored the biggest goal of her collegiate career in a
2-1 come-from-behind win over Kalamazoo College in the MIAA Tournament
semifinals November 2, blasting in a shot with 9:56 left in regulation that
gave Calvin a 2-1 lead.
 
Hearn has appeared and started in all 19 of Calvin’s games this fall,
recording a goals-against-average of 0.31 with 13 shutouts. In conference play,
she led the league in goals-against average (0.36), was second in saves
percentage (.812) and was second in shutouts (5).
 
Calvin is currently 15-2-2 overall and placed second in the MIAA regular
season standings with a 6-1-1 conference record. The Knights then captured
their third MIAA Tournament title with wins over Kalamazoo and Alma last week.

 
Calvin is now preparing for NCAA III Tournament play as it will face
third-ranked Otterbein College in a first round game Friday morning at 11 a.m.
in Westerville, Ohio.

MEN'S SOCCER
 
The 2010 All-MIAA men's soccer teams have been announced and several Calvin
players have been so honored. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are
senior midfielders Scott Hooker and Dan Kmetz and junior defensive backs Justin
Ahearne and Miles Colago. Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are
senior goalkeeper Ryan Bratt, senior defensive back Lucas Wilgenburg, junior
forward Brad Heethuis, junior midfielder Tyler Vegter and sophomore defensive
back Dan Nederhoed.
 
A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Hooker
is making his third appearance on the All-MIAA team. In conference play this
year, Hooker finished eighth in the MIAA in points (9) with three goals and
three assists. Two of his three goals were game-winners including a tally off a
free kick in the final three minutes of a late-season 1-0 win at Olivet. Hooker
was also named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once during the year.
 
A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Kmetz is making his second straight appearance
on the All-MIAA first team. A graduate of Strongsville High School, Kmetz
tallied four assists in league play including three assists in a 7-0 win over
Albion on October 9.
 
A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville High School, Ahearne was
part of a Calvin defense that allowed only seven goals in 14 league games. He
also provided offensive punch, scoring five goals in league play including a
hat trick performance against Albion on October 9. Ahearne was named MIAA
Offensive Player of the Week once during the year.
 
Colago is from Anoka, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Anoka High School. In
addition to contributing to Calvin's staunch defensive unit, he also collected
two goals and one assist during the conference season.
 
A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Bratt was the backbone of Calvin's
defensive unit this fall. A graduate of Washington Christian Academy, Bratt led
the MIAA in shutouts (8), goals-against-average (0.50), save percentage (.865)
and was sixth in saves (45).
 
A native of Visalia, California, Wilgenburg is making his third straight
appearance on the All-MIAA second team. A graduate of Central Valley Christian
Hig School, Wilgenburg was a key member of Calvin's defensive unit while also
scoring a goal in Calvin's 1-1 tie at Trine on October 12. Wilgenburg was also
named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week once during the year.
 
Heethuis is from Jenison and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. He
tallied two goals and one assist in league play while providing key possession
qualities in Calvin's centerfield attack.
 
Vegter is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School.
Vegter tallied five goals in league play including game-winners in victories
over Kalamazoo and Trine during the second half of the conference season.
 
Nederhoed is from Kentwood and is a graduate of East Kentwood High School. He
is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA second team. He was
another key member of a Calvin defensive unit that posted a league-leading nine
shutouts in conference play this fall.
 
Calvin is currently 15-2-3 overall and finished 9-2-3 in league play, allowing
the Knights to capture a share of their fourth consecutive MIAA title. Calvin
will open NCAA III Tournament play on Friday, hosting a first round game
against Ohio Northern (17-4-1).
 
NCAA III STARTING TIMES ANNOUNCED
 
Starting times for the NCAA III men's soccer regional at Calvin this Friday
and Saturday have been announced. Dominican (18-1-1) will open the regional on
Friday at 11 a.m. (EST) against Thomas More (11-5-2) of Kentucky with Calvin
(15-2-3) set to host Ohio Northern (17-4-1) at 1:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after
the completion of the Dominican/Thomas More game. Friday's winners will play in
the regional final on Saturday at 1 p.m. (EST).
 
Tickets will be $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and senior citizens and
$2.00 for children ages 3-12. Children under the age of three are admitted
free.
