Calvin Soccer Players Receive ESPN Academic All-District Honors

MEN'S SOCCER

Two members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received ESPN Academic All-District IV honors. Calvin seniors Scott Hooker and Ryan Bratt have both been named to the ESPN Academic All-District IV second team in the college division. Both players are receiving the honor for the first time.

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Hooker has been a four-year starter for Calvin in either a midfield or striker's role. This year, Hooker has three goals and four assists on a Calvin team that is currently 13-2-2 overall and ranked 18th nationally. He was recently named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Hooker has been named to the All-MIAA first team twice and to the All-MIAA second team once. Last fall, he was named to the All-Central Region second team after being named to the Great Lakes All-Region third team in 2008.

Over the course of his Calvin career, Hooker has tallied 26 goals, 26 assists and 78 points. He is tied for fifth on the Calvin career list for assists and is ninth on the Calvin career list for points.

A biology major, Hooker carries a 3.59 grade point average. He has been a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Bratt is from Silver Spring, Maryland. He is a graduate of Washington Christian Academy. Last fall, Bratt became Calvin's starting goalkeeper late in the season and has been a lynchpin of the Calvin defense since. This year, Bratt is 13-2-3 in goal with 11 shutouts and a goals-against-average of 0.45. He is currently ranked 21st nationally in goals-against-average.

In 2009, Bratt appeared in 10 games, started in seven and posted a 4-1-2 record with a goals-against-average of 0.59. Highlights of his 2009 campaign included a 1-0 shutout victory over rival Hope that helped Calvin clinch the MIAA title and shootout victories over Wartburg and Transylvania University in the NCAA III Tournament that helped catapault Calvin all the way to the national championship final in San Antonio, Texas.

At Calvin, Bratt holds a double-major of English and religion. He carries a 3.44 grade point average.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Two members of the Calvin women's soccer team have received ESPN Academic All-District IV honors. Senior Elaine Schnabel has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District IV first team in the college division while senior teammate Carly Prins has been named to the third team.

As a member of the first team, Schnabel now advances to the national ballot and is eligible for ESPN Academic All-America consideration. A native of Chesterton, Indiana, and a graduate of Chesterton High School, Schnabel is receiving all-district accolades for the second straight year. Last fall, she was named second team all-district.

A two-year starter in midfield, Schnabel has two goals and six assists this year on a Calvin team that is currently 14-2-2 overall and ranked 16th by d3soccer.com. Over the course of her Calvin career, Schnabel has career totals of 17 goals, 14 assists and 41 points. Of her 17 career goals, six have been game-winners.

An English major, Schnabel carries a grade point average of 3.94. She has been a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a six-time member of the Calvin Dean's List. As a student at Calvin, she has also been involved in the school's bi-annual Festival of Faith and Writing. After graduating in the spring, she hopes to teach English as a second language (ESL) overseas.
