In the third meeting between the two teams this season, #2 seed Calvin and #7
seed Adrian faced off again at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena Tuesday evening in a
first round MIAA tournament match, with the #7 nationally ranked Knights
defeating the Bulldogs in three sets (25-11, 25-13, 25-7). The Knights were
led by the Kamp sisters (Orland Park, IL) on the nets, with Becca and Lizzie
finishing with 13 and 12 kills respectively.
“I thought we played really well and that we had very few unforced errors,
which I was happy about,” said Coach Warners after the match. “I thought we
played very consistent in all of the skills of passing, serving, hitting and
setting.”
“We stayed focused when we needed to that was the difference,” Warners
concluded.
Calvin dominated the first set as the Knights dominated the nets, amassing a
number of kills and blocks, and Calvin forcefully closed the set out 25-11.
The second set started a bit slower for the Knights, but Calvin still went out
to take an initial 6-3 lead early in the set. The Knights would double,
triple, and even quadruple that score later on, leading 12-6, 18-9, and 24-12
as things progressed, and Calvin would finish the set 25-13. In the third set
Calvin jumped out 4-2, and then used a Becca Kamp serving run [ten straight
points] to lead 14-2. The Knights then went on an 11-5 run to finish 25-7,
closing out the set and securing the match sweep.
“Becca has been really working hard on her consistency with her jump serve,
and it’s a great thing to have because it’s hard to stop,” Warners said of
Kamp’s tough jump serve. “For her it’s just a matter of being consistent
and putting it in which she did a great job of tonight.”
Along with the Kamps, Calvin’s Erin Vander Plas (Cadillac, MI) added 6 kills
and Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids, MI) added 8. Freshman setter Megan Rietema
(Grand Rapids, MI) tallied 39 assists over all three sets, while Lizzie Kamp
led the team with 10 digs. Kelly Peterson (Anoka, MN) and Rietema both added 7
digs apiece. As a team the Knights totaled 8 blocks 6 service aces en route to
the win.
“From here on out we’re just focusing on fearing nobody, respecting everybody,
and playing with the mentality we need to play at the highest level without
letting our opponent dictate what’s happening in the match,” Warners said. “We
will be working tomorrow and Thursday for the Alma match [Friday], and we will
be focusing on each set and each point and letting the outcome take care of
itself.”
With the win, Calvin moves to 25-3 overall and 16-1 in conference play.
Calvin will travel to Hope for the remainder of the tournament, starting with a
Friday night contest against #3 seed Alma. Friday’s semifinal match at Hope’s
DeVos Fieldhouse is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Kalamazoo 1
By sports information student assistant Derek Neice
Trailing 1-0 going into the second half and with the season on the line,
Calvin rallied on its Senior Day with two second half goals to defeat the
Hornets of Kalamazoo College in a thrilling MIAA tournament semifinal match.
Ranked 16th nationally by d3soccer.com, the Knights (14-2-2) controlled the
pace of the game in both halves, but after a late first half goal by Kalamazoo,
Calvin needed to come from behind to extend its conference season.
“I think our team and our seniors especially want to close everything out well
and the right way,” Calvin coach Mark Recker said after. “We have a chance
here now to go in to Alma and really give a direct answer as to whether we
belong as the representative of the MIAA to the national tournament.”
Calvin faced a similar situation earlier this season at Kalamazoo when the
Hornets scored early on to lead, but in that one Calvin was unable to equalize.
Tuesday looked eerily similar at halftime as
Calvin surrendered a goal in the 43rd minute. Kalamazoo’s Emily Gray (Troy,
MI) knocked in the goal after a couple of rebounds in the box to give the
Hornets the lead. Calvin came off the field at the break looking dejected as
the Knights led 10-2 in the shot column despite trailing by a goal, but a good
halftime talk from Recker made a difference moving into the second half.
In the second half Calvin continued to pound the Hornet defense with scoring
chances, and in the 68th minute all the work paid off when senior Carly Prins
(Hudsonville, MI) hit a beautiful shot into the side netting after a couple of
rebounds in the Kalamazoo box.
“Carly [Prins]’s finish was finally something driven and was just a gorgeous
shot from the angle she took,” Recker said of the equalizing goal. The goal,
Prins’ 11th of the season, broke a scoreless streak by Kalamazoo’s defense that
had reached over 300 minutes.
Thirteen minutes later, and with only ten minutes to go in the game, sophomore
Jillian Honderd (Hudsonville, MI) gave Calvin the much-desired lead as a result
of a throw-in that snuck into the box.
Freshman Laura VanEngen (Grand Rapids, MI) heaved a throw into the box and
Honderd got on the receiving end of it with a nice backtracking run, volleying
the ball on one touch into the mid to upper level of the net for her 5th goal
of the season.
The final ten minutes saw Calvin hang back and play defensive soccer as the
Knights preserved the win. Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 23-6 over the course of
the match, with Prins accounting for nearly a third of those [7 shots].
Freshman keeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron, MI) surrendered the one goal but made
three saves in the match to keep the Hornets from doing any further damage.
At the break Calvin also performed a nice ceremony recognizing the five
seniors on the roster (Carly Prins, Lauren Heyboer, Elaine Schnabel, Stephanie
Malburg, Kellie Honderd), giving the leaders credit for their achievements over
their Calvin soccer careers.
“This particular group of seniors have taken a very young squad and carried
them on their backs,” Recker said of the veteran group. “My hat’s off to this
group because the record that we have really is in a large part because of the
quality and character of their performance.
The win will see Calvin travel to Alma this Saturday to play for the league
title and a shot at an automatic bid to the Division III national tournament.
