MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Kalamazoo 0

By sports information student assistant Andrew Knot
After a disappointing loss to Hope on Wednesday, the Knights responded with a
critical 3-0 victory over MIAA leading Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon. The
Knights remain third in the tightly packed MIAA race, just two points behind
league-leading Adrian and one point back of second place Olivet.
After a rather uneventful opening to the game, sophomore Nick Holtrop found
high-school teammate and junior Tyler Vegter on a vertical run into the box.
Vegter skirted a shot passed Hornet keeper Grant Carey and into the side
netting to put Calvin on the board.
Despite being outshot 9-3 in the first half, the lone goal held a lead for
Calvin going into the break. Then, in the 62st minute, Holtrop headed in a
throw-in from freshman Mike Sanderson into the net, doubling Calvin’s lead.
Throughout the half, Calvin’s back line took the sting out of the Hornet’s
attack, limiting them to just two shots in the final 45 minutes.
Then with less than three minutes to play, junior Justin Ahearne cleaned up a
scrum in front of the net with another header goal - his sixth of the year.
This brought the score to 3-0, which held for the remainder of the game.
Goalkeeper Ryan Bratt finished his clean sheet with three saves, all coming in
the first half.
Coach Chris Hughes recognized how critical this game was, saying, “We had to
have three points today. Tying and losing weren’t options.” With 18 players
seeing significant playing time, depth gave Calvin a big edge. “We needed to
play a full 90 minutes today and our depth provided a good balance. We got a
lot out of everybody,” he added.
Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it journeys to Olivet for a crucial
league match scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Albion, MI- Calvin used a pair of first half goals to record a 2-0 victory at
Albion Saturday afternoon. The Knights extended their win streak to four games
with the win and remain three points behind league-leading Alma with just one
regular season conference game left to play.
According to Coach Mark Recker, “Scoring early, especially on the road puts
pressure on the home team. With the way the opposing teams have played us, in
large part being defensive minded, if we can execute early, it takes opponents
out of that and gives us more chances due to the fact it takes them out of
their game.”
Such was the story for the Knights today; squaring off against a defensive
minded Albion squad which, attempting to stop the Calvin attack, at many points
had nine players in the defensive end of half.
Calvin got on the board early with Danielle Carter scoring her second goal of
the year in the 5th minute off of a Lauren Heyboer corner kick. The second goal
came late in the first half as Kelly Koets rocketed a ball from the 18 yard box
into the far post in the 36th minute for the first goal of her career.
It seems the story of the year that the Knights look to score early as they
did today to attempt to open things up offensively late in the game.
“Danielle (Carter) scoring early did a huge part in opening things up later in
the game for us” Though the Knights opened things up early with two goals, they
were unable to capitalize on 10 second half shots, including multiple other
scoring opportunities.
“We’ve been trying to focus in on offensive efficiency and we can say today’s
game showed team movement type of pace that we’re really capable of,” said
Recker.
After the initial goals by the Knights, the Britons turned up the physicality,
attempting to get the Knights out of their style of play.
When asked about the physical nature of the game Coach Recker was pleased with
his team’s performance, “We stayed fairly poised throughout the game despite
the physicality being turned up. One player for us you really have to give
credit to is Carly Prins. As a senior she really has a target on her back
because of the skilled player she is.”
Though the Knights were battered and bruised, the two-goal margin was enough
to lead them to victory and keep them in the hunt for one of the top seeds for
the upcoming MIAA tournament.
Calvin will travel to Olivet next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest with the MIAA
Tournament slated to start October 30 with the top two seeds receiving first
round byes.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
By sports information student assistant Derek Neice
Although it was an unscored meet, the Knights got their 2010-11 season
underway Saturday afternoon and saw good results in the Calvin-hosted MIAA
Relays. The Knights swam well on both the men and women’s sides, and the meet
proved to be a good survey of where most teams in the conference are at this
point in the long season.
“We were just looking to see what we have and what everybody else in the
league has right now,” Coach Gelderloos said. “This year we have a lot quieter
of a team but they’re a very hardworking bunch.”
On the women’s side, the Knights won many of the relay races. In the 200 yd
back relay Calvin’s A team (Caitlin Alexander, Brianna Vanden Ende, Stephie
Fox, Monica Bressler) finished first with a time of 1:53.78. In the 1500 yd
free relay Calvin’s A team (Stephie Fox, Shelby Cloyd, Claire Strunk) won with
a time of 16:15.01. In the 200 yd fly relay Calvin’s A team (Rachel Bos,
Rachel Colasurdo, Ellie Price, Caitlin Alexander) won in a time of 1:51.44.
The 400 yd medley relay saw Calvin’s A team (Libby Counsell, Caitlin Alexander,
Ellie Price, Rachel Colasurdo) win in a time of 4:19.16. And finally in the
200 yd free relay, Calvin’s A team (Rachel Bos, Stephie Fox, Maria Sedjo,
Monica Bressler) won in a time of 1:41.94.
Second place finishes for the Calvin women included the A team (Libby
Counsell, Rachel Colasurdo, Ellie, Price, Gillian Morris) for the 200 yd breast
relay in a time of 2:11.25, the A team (Bos, Sedjo, Rechel, Cloyd) for the 500
yd free relay in a time of 4:54.33, and the B team (Kendra Kinzer, Cloyd,
Strunk) for the 1500 free relay in a time of 16:46.80.
“The women won a bunch of races and look to be very deep again,” Gelderloos
said of his reigning MIAA champion women. “Our goal is still to win our league
and to compete at a high level nationally, but we definitely have to reprove
ourselves.”
On the men’s side, the top finishes were a second place finish in the 200 yd
breast relay as Calvin’s A team (Greg Gorham, Stephen Kraft, Jon Ptashnik,
Peter Johnson) finished in a time of 1:55.57, and a second place finish in the
400 yd medley relay as Calvin’s A team (Greg Gorham, Stephen Kraft, Peter
Johnson, Mathias Bares) finished in a time of 3:51.92.
“For the men we saw a bunch of yellow [Calvin] caps in the front of the pack
which is very fun to see,” Gelderloos said of the men’s performance.
The next meet for the Knights will be another home meet next week Friday as
Calvin hosts Grand Valley.
