ALBION, MI - The Calvin College Knights Women’s Volleyball Team came to Albion
College looking to keep but a single blemish on their conference record for the
season. The Albion Britons put up little resistance as Calvin defeated them in
straight sets 25-17, 25-10, 25-9 in a match that lasted only 51 minutes.
Calvin started out a little shaky as it held the lead only 6-4 in the opening
point. Then the Knights unleashed their snipers. Winning 15 of the next 19
points, Calvin held a 21-11 lead and cruised to a first set victory. The
second set was more of the same. Calvin went up 17-5 by stringing a couple of
points together off of the services of Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, Chicago
Christian) and Kim Start (Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian). The Knights
lost the next two points, and then went on an 8-3 run ending the second set.
The Britons lone lead came at 2-0 in the third set. Calvin then won 10 of the
next 11 points behind a long service run from Jen Pluymert (Grand Rapids, Grand
Rapids Christian). The Knights didn’t look back, winning the third set and the
match.
“I thought we played very consistent and steady. That’s not always an easy
thing to do when you are expected to win” head coach Amber Warners added after
the match.
Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, Chicago Christian) led the Knights in kills with 19
and boasted a .667 hitting percentage. Lizzie Kamp and Renee DeHaan (Grand
Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian) helped out with eight kills each. Albion was
led by Haley Plasman with six kills, and Alexis Brumm added four. Megan
Rietema (Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian) dished out 23 assist while
Carolyn Nelson (Milan, Milan) played the third set dishing out 10 assists.
Caryn Miller had 14 assists for the Britons.
The real story was the block for Calvin. The Knights had eight total team
blocks to Albion’s five. As a team, Calvin hit .337 as a team while the
Knights held the Britons to -.054 hitting percentage.
“Blocking is obviously a strength of our team. We have the top three blockers
in the MIAA. When we are on, it makes the back row’s job much easier” Warners
said.
This win improves Calvin to 21-3 on the year, 12-1 in the MIAA. Calvin
returns to action Saturday when it faces the Olivet Comets at Calvin’s Van
Noord Arena.
