ALMA - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team moved into a tie for
first place in the MIAA standings with a 2-0 victory at Alma Saturday
afternoon. Ranked 18th nationally in the Division III Coaches Poll and seventh
in the d3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (9-1-1 overall) moved to 3-1-1 in the
MIAA with the win, moving one point ahead of Adrian, Trine, Hope and Kalamazoo
which are all just one point behind.
Calvin is tied for first place with Olivet which defeated Trine 1-0 Wednesday.
Olivet is also 3-1-1 in league play. In its win over Alma, Calvin scored a goal
in each half.
Freshman Zach Willis (Wyoming/Unity Christian HS) scored his fourth goal of
the year on a play midway through the first half as collected a loose ball and
drilled a shot in from the 18.
The clinching goal came late in the second half as junior Justin Ahearne
(Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) redirected a shot into the net off a free kick by
Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville). The goal by Ahearne was his second
of the year.
Calvin held a 17-6 shots at goal advantage.
Senior Ryan Bratt picked up the shutout victory for Calvin in goal - his
eighth of the year and 11th of his career.
Calvin will host Albion on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NEW DELHI, INDIA - Megann (VanderVliet) Rhode, a 2007 Calvin College graduate,
has advanced to the finals of the hammer throw competition at the Commonwealth
Games. Representing the Canadien track and field team, Rhode produced the
fourth-best throw in the preliminaries of Wednesday's hammer throw competition.
A native of Oakville, Ontario, Rhode competed in the second flight of
throwers. She fouled on her first two attempts but then uncorked a throw of
62.06 meters (203-7 feet) that was good for second place in her flight and
fourth place overall through the prelims.
Rhode will compete in the finals on Thursday at 8:20 a.m. (EST).
