Men's Golf Ties for Third at Red Poling Classic;
Megann Rhode Takes Seventh in Hammer Throw at Commonwealth Games;
Women's Basketball Ranked 19th in WDIII News Pre-Season Poll - Carris Verkaik Named Pre-Season All-American
MEN'S GOLF
DEARBORN - The Calvin men's golf team finished in a tie for third place in a field of six teams at the Red Poling Classic Thursday at the Dearborn TPC. Calvin finished with a team score of 321 strokes. Malone (OH) took first place with a team score of 296.
Calvin was led by sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 77 while freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79, sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) an 82, junior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) and 83 and freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) an 88.
Calvin will now prepare for its season finale on Saturday when the Knights compete at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club at 1 p.m.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NEW DELHI, INDIA - Calvin College graduate Megann Rhode closed out competition at the Commonwealth Games Thursday morning with a seventh place finish in the hammer throw. Rhode's best throw in the finals was a mark of 62.36 meters (204 feet, seven inches).
Rhode was one of three competitors from Canada in the finals. Rhode had the second-best finish of the three Canadian competitors. Her teammate Sultana Frizzel won the competition with a Commonwealth Games record throw of 68.57 meters (224 feet, 11 inches).

BASKETBALL
The Calvin women's basketball team is ranked 19th in the pre-season Top 25 poll released by Women's Division III News. A year ago, Calvin finished 24-5 overall and advanced to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights return 2010 MIAA MVP Carissa Verkaik who heads into her sophomore season.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has been named a pre-season All-American by Women's Division III News. Verkaik averaged 18.1 points and 9.4 rebounds a game during her freshman campaign.
The Calvin women's basketball team will open its season on November 16 when it hosts Manchester College at Van Noord Arena. Calvin will face two teams during the season ranked in the WDIII News pre-season Top 25 poll. MIAA rival Hope is ranked second. Calvin will face Hope January 18 (Grand Rapids) and February 5 (Holland). Calvin will also face 18th-ranked Carthage (WI) in a non-conference game at Calvin on December 8.
Calvin will also face two players receiving All-America recognition from WDIII News as Carthage junior Diana Jacklin is a pre-season honorable mention All-America selection while Hope senior Carrie Snikkers is not only a pre-season All-America choice, but the pre-season Player of the Year choice by WDIII News.
On the men's side, Calvin is not ranked in the DIII News Pre-Season Top 25 poll. Like the Calvin women however, the Knights will face the DIII News Pre-Season Player of the Year choice in Carthage senior Steve Djurickovic. Calvin will face fourth-ranked (DIII News) Carthage on December 4 in a game scheduled to be played in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Calvin will also face 14th-ranked Hope (DIII News) on January 5 (Holland) and January 29 (Grand Rapids). Calvin will also go up against Hope senior Peter Bunn who is a pre-season honorable mention All-America selection by DIII News. In addition, Calvin will go up against Olivet senior Michael McClary who has been named a pre-season DIII News All-American. Calvin will face Olivet on January 12 (Grand Rapids) and February 5 (Olivet).
The Calvin men's basketball team is scheduled to open its season on November 16 when it travels to Davenport University.
