Calvin 3, Alma 0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-18)
ALMA - Calvin picked up an important 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 victory at Alma
Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in league play at the midpoint of the MIAA
double round-robin schedule. Ranked ninth nationally, Calvin improves to 13-2
overall and 8-0 in league play with the win.
Tuesday’s match was played at Alma’s new Art Smith Arena, marking Calvin’s
first-ever visit to the sparkling new facility. Calvin’s effort on Tuesday was
also sparkling, particularly early in the match when the Knights rolled out to
big leads in sets one and two. Alma came back to take a brief lead in set two
at 18-17 but the Knights responded by winning seven of the next 13 points to
claim the win. In set three, Calvin broke led 11-10 and then broke away late,
building a 20-15 advantage and never looking back from there.
Calvin sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a
stellar all-around match with 14 digs, 13 kills, two block assists, one block
solo and an attack percentage of .500. Chipping in with six kills apiece were
senior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) and juniors Renee DeHaan
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain
Christian HS). DeHaan also had five block assists. Junior Kelly Peterson
(Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) and sophomore Kim Start (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) had 10 and 11 digs respectively.
Sophomore Julia Hilbrand (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added five
kills, seven digs, a service ace and two block assists. Freshman setter Megan
Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 31 assists and three block
assists.
Calvin will now prepare for a busy weekend as the Knights host Adrian Friday
night at 6:30 p.m. and travel to Trine on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Alma 1 (OT Tie)

Calvin outshot the Scots of Alma 26-7 Tuesday afternoon but was forced to
settle with a 1-1 tie game after double overtime. The Knights controlled the
ball through most of the match but were not able to ever obtain that go-ahead
goal.
Early on, the Scots opened the scoring when freshman Taryn Handyside
(Montrose, MI) streaked across the Calvin box and put a shot on goal that
bounced over the outstretched arms of Calvin goalkeeper Ashton Hearn and into
the net for an Alma lead.
Calvin would retaliate before the break though when senior Elaine Schnabel
(Chesterton, IN) was able to score on a scramble in the box after sophomore
Jillian Honderd (Hudsonville, MI) crossed the ball into the mix.
“Clearly we created opportunities, especially in the first half,” Calvin coach
Mark Recker commented afterwards. “We had some very good chances that we
failed to execute and when you get that many shots but only one goal there is
clearly a need to look at offensive finishing.”
“We’re hoping to bring all eleven players on the field to a level of intensity
that facilitates quicker flow of play,” Recker concluded.
Calvin led 18-4 in shots at the half, and Hearn finished the match with 2
saves. The tie pushes Calvin’s overall record to 8-2-2 with a 1-1-1 conference
record. The next game for the Knights will be this Saturday at Home against
Adrian at noon.
