Men's Golf Captures MIAA Jamboree - Moves Into Second in MIAA Overall
Standings - Doezema Claims Medalist Honors
Renee DeHaan Named MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week
 
MEN'S GOLF
 
CASCADE - The Calvin men’s golf team used home course advantage to its
advantage by taking first place at an MIAA jamboree hosted by the Knights at
the Watermark Country Club Monday afternoon.
 
Calvin posted a first place team score of 305 strokes led by the medalist
performance of senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who
fired a one-under par round of 71. Calvin finished three strokes ahead of Trine
on Monday.
 
The Knights still trail Trine by 18 strokes heading into the final MIAA
Jamboree - scheduled for this Saturday at Alma - but did move into sole
possession of second place in the MIAA overall standings.
 
Calvin is now three strokes ahead of Hope in the overall standings and 12
strokes ahead of fourth place Adrian. Senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a stellar afternoon for Calvin on
Saturday, firing a round of 73 that left him tied for fourth place
individually.
 
Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Dave Sarkipato
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) with an 80, sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 81 and freshman David Veen (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 82.
 
NOTES: Doezema captured medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate
career on Monday...his round of 71 matches his collegiate-best..he also had a
round of 71 at the eighth and final league tournament of the year as a freshman
in 2007, carding a 71 as a freshman.....Doezema is a two-sport athlete at
Calvin as he has also been a member of Calvin's ACHA Ice Hockey team....his
younger sistest Elise Doezema is a member of the Calvin women's golf
team....Doezema is the third Calvin medalist in MIAA play this fall as Ben
Kuiper was medalist at the third MIAA jamboree back on September 15 at the
Medalist Golf Club while Jess Hendriksma shared medalist honors back on
September 25 at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country
Club....Calvin has now taken first place in two jamboree tournaments this
fall...Calvin also took first place at the MIAA jamboree at the Medalist Golf
Club (September 15) with a team score of 303...Calvin also took first place a
year ago at the MIAA jamboree held at the Watermark Country Club, recording a
course record score of 294....Hendriksma is now in second place in the MIAA
individual standings with an average of 74.1 strokes-per-round...Kuiper and
Doezema are tied for 12th (76.3) while Sarkipato is tied for 14th (77.4).

Calvin College junior middle blocker Renee DeHaan has been named the MIAA
Player of the Week in volleyball.

DeHaan, a junior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), had 13 kills
for a hitting percentage of .481 in leading the first-place Knights to an MIAA
victory over Kalamazoo. She added five blocks in the four-game match. DeHaan is
being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
 
DeHaan is averaging 2.06 kills-per-set along with a hitting percentage of .325
this year. She is also averaging 1.13 blocks-per-set.
 
Ranked ninth nationally, Calvin (12-2 overall, 7-0 MIAA) returns to action on
Tuesday when it travels to Alma for a key MIAA match slated to start at 6:30
p.m.
