On a cold, blustery day at Zuidema field, Calvin and Olivet battled to a 0-0
overtime tie.

Both squads entered the game with 2-1 conference records, tying them atop the
MIAA.

The Knights generated offense early and often in the first half. Their best
opportunity came off a Brad Heethuis volley from less than eight yards out.
Olivet keeper Ethan Felsing reacted with a fantastic one-handed diving save to
keep Calvin off the board.

Calvin continued to pressure the Comets, freshman Zach Willis blazed down the
sideline and attempted to fire a shot over Felsing, but the keeper managed to
deflect it off net.
Calvin went into halftime with a 7-3 advantage on shots. The two teams were
also tied in fouls at 7-7, which reflected the notably physical nature of the
game.

The second half continued as such. Each team finished the game with three
yellow cards and Calvin was also issued one red card. Calvin finished the
match with 15 fouls to Olivet’s 19.
In the first overtime period, Calvin continued to create chances. Senior Dan
Kmetz put a shot just over the net and junior Tyler Vegter just missed a
breakaway chance. The score held in the second overtime.

Calvin was held scoreless despite 15 total shots.

“We take a point and go forward,” said Calvin’s Coach Chris Hughes of the
game. “We had some good opportunities to score and put some good pressure on.
Olivet is a good, scrappy team. You like that competition for your team. It
makes you better.”

eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday as Kalamazoo College
handed Calvin a 1-0 defeat.

Kalamazoo stung the Knights early as Stephanie Verbeek ripped in a shot six
minutes into the match. The goal was just the second allowed by the Calvin
defense all year.

Calvin then begin to mount pressure, outshooting the Hornets 8-4 in the first
half including 7-1 over the final 25 minutes of the first half. Calvin
continued to pressure in the second half but could not find the back of the net
as Kalamazoo claimed the conference win. Calvin finished the game with a 14-7
shots at goal advantage and had nine corner kicks but Kalamazoo goalkeeper
Courtney McCoy had seven saves.

Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn had two saves for Calvin in defeat.

A year ago, Kalamazoo battled Calvin to a 0-0 overtime tie in the MIAA
