MEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Hiram 0
HIRAM, OH – The top-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team remained unbeaten with a
3-0 victory at Hiram College Saturday afternoon. Playing nearby his hometown of
Strongsville, Ohio, Calvin College senior Dan Kmetz enjoyed a happy homecoming
by scoring the game-winning goal in the 34th minute of play, ripping in a
30-yard blast that knuckled over the Hiram goalkeeper and just under the
crossbar.
Calvin (6-0-0) then received late second half goals from senior Brad Heethuis
(Jenison/Unity Christian HS) and Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian
HS) to put the game away.
The goal by Heethuis came on a well-conceived pass from senior Scott Hooker
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS). The goal was the third of the year for
Heethuis. The goal for Broekhuizen was also his third tally of the season.
“This was a nice game to end our non-conference season,” said Calvin men’s
soccer coach Chris Hughes after the game. “The goal by Kmetz was just a great
college goal – a real highlight quality shot. I know it was a big thrill for
him to score a goal like that in front of several family members and friends
who came to see him.”
The goals by Heethuis and Broekhuizen were a result of Calvin continuing to
pressure the Terriers (2-5-0) with fresh players throughout the game. “I think
our depth came into play in the last 10minutes when we scored two more to put
the game away,” said Hughes. “Our strikers were fresh and that forces a defense
that has been in the entire game to work extremely hard.”
Calvin finished the game with an 18-7 shots at goal advantage including an
11-3 advantage in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Bratt (Silver Spring, MD/Washington Christian Academy)
went the distance in nets to post his fourth shutout of the season and the
seventh of his career.
Calvin will now prepare to host Adrian next Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Zuidema
Field in the MIAA opener for both teams.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 0, Augustana 0 – 2OT Tie
ROCK ISLAND, IL – In a rematch of a national semi-quarterfinal NCAA III
Tournament game from a year ago, Calvin and Augustana (IL) battled to a 0-0
double-overtime tie. Both teams came into the contest nationally-ranked as host
Augustana was ranked 10th in the most recent Division III Coaches Top 25 poll
while Calvin came in ranked 20th in the same poll.
In regulation time, both teams finished with six shots apiece. The two teams
then traded momentum in overtime as the Knights outshot the host Vikings
(4-0-2) 3-1 in the first overtime with Augustana coming back to outshoot Calvin
4-0 in the final 10 minutes including a flurry of three shots at goal in the
final two minutes of play.
Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron HS) was superb
in nets for the Knights, collecting six saves including a key save in the
second overtime session. Hearn now has seven shutouts on year with a season
goals-against-average of 0.12.
Sophomore Francesca Smith (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South HS) led Calvin in
shots with three including a pair of shots that were on goal.
Augustana finished the game with an 11-9 shots at goal advantage. Kayla
Radloff had four saves for the Vikings.
Calvin will now break for a week and will return to action next Saturday when
it travels to Ohio Wesleyan for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
