CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPT. 7, 2010 (PART TWO)
 
Volleyball Opens MIAA Campaign With Win at Adrian;
Women's Golf Second at Hope Invitational;
Calvin Hockey Player to Be Part of All-Star Team Set to Take on Red Wings Alumni
 
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Adrian 0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-12)
 
ADRIAN - The nationally-ranked Calvin volleyball team opened up its 2010 MIAA campaign with a 25-19, 25-10, 25-12 victory at Adrian Tuesday night. Adrian (2-4 overall, 0-1 MIAA) gave Calvin a test early, leading 6-4 in set one and later trailing just 14-13. Calvin (4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAA) then caught fire and never looked back, scoring five unanswered points, en route to gaining a set one win.
 
In set two, Calvin scored 18 of the first 24 points and in set three, scored 12 of the first 16 to cruise to the three-set win.
 
As a team, Calvin recorded a sizzling .423 hitting percentage led by junior Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) who had 14 kills, an attack percentage of .476, five block assists and two service aces. Junior Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had eight kills with a .727 hitting percentage while junior Erin VanderPlas (Cadillac/McBain Christian HS) chipped in with seven kills and a .545 attack percentage. Sophomore Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) also had seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage. DeHaan also had one solo block and four block assists. Freshman setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 27 assists, four digs and seven block assists.
 
Calvin will now prepare to host Trine Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena followed by a Saturday home match - also at Van Noord Arena - against rival Hope at 1 p.m. Both matches will feature live audio and video streaming at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/calvin.portal
 
Earlier in the day, the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll was released and Calvin moved up one spot to eighth after opening the year ranked ninth. The AVCA Division III Top 25 poll can be found online at: http://www.avca.org/divisions/division-three-women/poll-9-7-10/
 
WOMEN'S GOLF
 
HOLLAND - Fighting through strong gusts of wind, the Calvin women's golf team finished second at the Hope Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club. Calvin finished with a team score of 401 strokes with host Hope winning with a team score of 360 strokes. Rochester College of Michigan was third with a team score of 429.
 
Calvin's top finisher was freshman Carlia Canto (Marysville, MI/Port Huron Northern HS) with a round of 88 that was good for second place individually. Sophomore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 97 followed by freshmen Ashley Tiefenthal (Manistee/Manistee HS) and Taylor McClaskie (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard-Darby HS) with rounds of 108. Freshman Melissa Shepard (Lowell/Lowell HS) also had a round of 110.
 
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the first MIAA Tournament of the year. The tournament will be hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club beginning at 1 p.m.

HOCKEY
Be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime event on Saturday, September 18, 2010. Come and see some of our best West Michigan hockey players put their skills to the test in a charity hockey match against the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Team. The West Michigan team will include a handful of former Calvin hockey players. Proceeds from the event will go towards the locker room expansion.

3:30 p.m. - player warm-up
4 p.m. - game time
5:30 p.m. - BBQ dinner
