VOLLEYBALL

The Calvin women's volleyball team has achieved success on the court. Now the Knights are being recognized for their success in the classroom.

The Calvin women's volleyball team has received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

During the 2009-10 academic year, the Calvin volleyball team achieved a cumulative team grade point average of 3.504.

Led by head coach Amber Warners, the Knights finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 28-7 that included an MIAA Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA III Tournament. Of the 22 players in the Calvin women's volleyball program last fall, 12 received MIAA Academic Honor Roll distinction for achieving a 3.50 grade point average or above during the 2009-10 academic year.

In addition, sophomore Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, Illinois/Chicago Christian HS) was named a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, becoming the first volleyball player in Calvin history to receive the award.

Calvin is one of 75 schools at the NCAA III level to receive the AVCA Team Academic Award which makes up approximately 21 percent of the NCAA III membership that participates in women's volleyball.
