MIAA TEAM GPA HONORS
For the second consecutive year, 10 Calvin College athletics teams have
received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2009-10 academic
year – matching a Calvin record. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic
Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic
teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the
entire 2009-10 academic year. A year ago, Calvin established a school record
as 10 of its 17 varsity teams eligible for the honor achieved a 3.3 or better
grade point average.
Eight of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the
men’s cross country team and men’s golf team also achieved the feat. Calvin
teams that received the honor this year include: the women’s golf team, women’s
soccer team, women’s cross country team, women’s volleyball team, women’s
basketball team, women’s swimming and diving team, women’s track and field
team, women’s tennis team and as mentioned, the men’s cross country and men’s
golf teams.
This is the 12th year the award has been presented. Calvin had 10 of the 46
MIAA teams that earned the award. Of special note, the Calvin women’s cross
country team earned the award for the 12th consecutive year, joining the Albion
women’s tennis, Albion women’s soccer and Hope women’s cross country teams as
one of four squads that have received the award all 12 years of its existence.

In addition, Calvin had two of the top three ranking teams in terms of
cumulative grade point average. Calvin’s highest ranking team in terms of
cumulative grade point average was its women’s cross country team. Led by head
coach Brian Diemer, the women’s cross country team posted a 3.605 grade point
average to rank second among the list of MIAA teams so honored. Trine had the
top spot with its women’s cross country team at 3.691. The Calvin men’s cross
country team also led by Diemer placed third with a 3.570 grade point average.

Bergsma had both of his teams receive the honor as his women’s golf team
achieved the award for the fourth time, posting a 3.515 grade point average
while his women’s tennis team was so honored for the sixth time.
John Ross also had his women’s basketball team on the list for a sixth
straight year, posting a GPA of 3.352. Led by head coach Bret Otte, the women’s
track and field team picked up the award for the sixth straight year and for
the ninth time overall, posting a grade point average of 3.462. In addition,
the women’s volleyball team led by head coach Amber Warners picked up the award
for the eighth time, recording a team grade point average of 3.504.
Other notables included the women’s soccer team earning the award under head
coach Mark Recker for the fourth time and the Calvin women’s swimming and
diving team doing so for the fifth time – all under the watch of current head
coach Dan Gelderloos. The men’s golf team, led by head coach Brian Bolt,
received the award for the third time.
