Baseball Takes Both End of Doubleheader at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO -- Calvin took both ends of a doubleheader at Kalamazoo, winning by scores of 12-5 and 6-1. The pair of victories moves Calvin into a tie for fifth place in the MIAA standings with Alma as the Knights are now 6-8 in league play, 9-13 overall and owners of a modest four-game win streak.
 
In game one, Calvin exploded for nine runs in the top of the first inning, using six hits and two Kalamazoo errrors. Sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) and senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) both had two-run RBI singles in the inning while sophomore Tyler Berger had an RBI double. Berger later cranked a two-run homer to left-center in the fifth. Junior Peter Steiner (Chicago, IL) started and went 5.1 innings to record his third victory of the year. Steiner (3-2) struck out eight batters and walked two. Sophomore Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe) went the final 1.2 innings to preserve the win. Calvin had 14 hits in the win led by Tipton who was 4-for-4. Gurzyski and Berger had two hits apiece. Freshman Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) also had three hits and drove in two runs.
 
In game two, freshman Eric Poencet (Northview HS) was stellar in his second collegiate start, allowing just one run in six innings of work. Poencet (1-0) struck out seven batters and walked one while junior Cody Batchelor (Durango, CO) came on in the top of the seventh to strike out the side to close out the win.
 
Freshman Drew Vos (Grand Rapids Christian HS) collected a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Jake VanAlten (Holland Christian HS) then drove in a run on a bunt single to give the Knights a 3-1 lead.
 
In the sixth, Tos doubled and scored in a single by VanAlten. In the seventh, Berger ripped his second homer of the day and his third of the year to increase Calvin's lead.
 
Calvin collected 12 hits in the game two win led by VanAlten who was 3-for-3 at the plate. Tipton was 2-for-3 while senior Rob Kool (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 2-for-3.
 
Calvin and Kalamazoo will close out the four-game series on Saturday when the Knights host the Hornets in a twinbill scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
