Women's Tennis Picks Up Win at Kalamazoo - Moves Into ITA National Rankings;
Men's Tennis Hits Double-Digit Win Mark With Victory at Alma;
Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Kalamazoo
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Kalamazoo 1
 
KALAMAZOO -- On a day that the Calvin women's tennis team moved into the ITA Division III national rankings, the Knights also picked up an 8-1 victory over Kalamazoo College. Calvin's victory over Kalamazoo on Tuesday allowed the Knights to improve to 13-2 overall and to 6-0 in MIAA dual match play. Calvin also cracked the national rankings for the first time this spring as the Knights are ranked 30th in the most recent ITA Division III National poll released today.
 
Calvin grabbed the first eight points of the match, sweeping all three doubles points and then winning the first five singles flights.
 
Calvin's doubles victories came from juniors Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) at No. 1 doubles; seniors Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) and Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 2 doubles and seniors Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) and Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 doubles.
 
In singles play, Oosterhouse moved to 17-1 on the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Spoelhof improved to 10-6 on the season with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles and Geenen moved to 14-3 with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. In addition, Strikwerda improved to 13-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles and junior Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) moved to 11-4 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
 
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it competes against Grand Valley State University at 3:30 p.m. in Allendale.

ALMA - Calvin improved to 10-6 overall and to 1-0 in the MIAA with an 8-1 win at Alma on Tuesday. Calvin grabbed an early 3-0 leads with victories from sophomore Brian DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) and senior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) at No. 1 doubles, freshman Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH) and sophomore Jon Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Philip Reinken (Morton, IL) and Jarod Brower (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 doubles.
 
In singles play, Phillips was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles DeMaagd a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles, Reinken a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 winner at No. 3 singles, freshman Vashan Wright a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 5 singles and Brower a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 6 singles.
 
Calvin will now prepare to host rival Hope on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Calvin's Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Calvin picked up a pair of conference victory on Tuesday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, defeating Kalamazoo 10-0 in five innings and 13-3 in six innings. The Knights are now 8-9 overall and 4-6 in MIAA play.
 
In game one, Calvin used a nine-run second inning outburst to put the game away. Freshman Hannah DeWeerd (Grad Rapids Christian HS) cracked a three-run homer in the inning - her second home run of the season. Senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS), sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) and freshman Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) also had doubles in the game. Freshman Shelby Mast went all five innings and allowed just one hit, striking out four and walking none. Mast is now 7-8 on the year.
 
In game two, senior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) went all six innings for Calvin to pick up her victory of the season. Johnson (1-1) struck out four and scattered five hits. Meanwhile, Calvin collected 11 hits led by Prins who went 3-for-4 to raise her season batting average to .408. Sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had an inside-the-park grand slam homer, belting the ball to deep right with the bases full and racing around the bases ahead of the throw.
 
Freshman Bekah Kline (Rochester, MI) also had three hits while freshman Aubree Thompson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two hits.
 
Calvin returns to action on Friday night when it travels to Judson University (IL) for a twilight doubleheader scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
