Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Flying Dutch of Hope on Monday, falling 4-0 and 4-1. Monday's twinbill marked a meeting of coach and pupil as longtime Hope coach Karla Wolters went head-to-head against first-year Calvin softball coach Sharon DeKleine who was an All-American shortstop and pitcher for Wolters when Wolters served as Calvin's head softball coach in the mid 1980's. DeKleine also served as Wolter's pitching coach last year at Hope.

With Wolters announcing her coaching retirement at the conclusion of this season, Monday's twinbill featured perhaps the only head-to-head meeting between the two coaches.

A strong pitching performance by Deidra Enochs propelled Hope to the game one win as Calvin picked up just four hits and never moved a runner beyond second base. Hope scored single runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings. Hope finished with seven hits including four of the extra-base variety. Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss for Calvin despite striking out six batters without a walk.

In game two, Calvin (6-9 overall, 2-6 MIAA) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a squeeze bunt by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) in the top of the fourth inning that brought home senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) who led off the inning with a triple to left field. Hope answered back with four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth however, using a Calvin infield error and then a two-out bases-loaded double by Abby Phillips to break a 1-1 tie.

Calvin then loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning but could not bring home a run. The Knights were unable to mount a threat in the seventh as Hope starter Michelle Marra closed out the win in the pitcher's circle.

Mast (6-8) took the loss in both games for the Knights. In game two, she scattered nine Hope hits while striking out two and walking one. Calvin had five hits with Marra striking out four and walking three for Hope.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Kalamazoo in a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
