Tennis Teams Split With Grinnell;
Baseball Falls to University of Chicago;
Softball Defeated by Whitworth
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Grinnell 0
ORLANDO, FL The Calvin women's tennis team upped its season record to 8-1 and its spring break mark to 4-0 with a 9-0 victory over Grinnell College Wednesday afternoon. Picking up singles victories for Calvin were junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 1 singles, junior Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) at No. 2 singles, senior Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 singles, senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) at No. 4 singles, junior Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) at No. 5 singles and senior Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) at No. 6 singles.
Oosterhouse is now 11-1 in singles play - all coming at No. 1 singles this spring.
In doubles, Oosterhouse and Spoelhof teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, Strikwerda and senior Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) combined for a 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles and DeGroot and Geenen a win at No. 3 doubles.
DeGroot and Geenen are 9-0 at No. 3 doubles this spring.
Next up for Calvin is a match against regionally-ranked Luther (IA) Thursday afternoon at noon. Calvin will enter the match ranked 13th in the ITA Central Region rankings while Luther enters the match ranked eighth in the region. On Tuesday, Luther also defeated Grinnell 9-0. Luther also defeated regionally-ranked Colby College 6-3 on Tuesday while Calvin defeated Colby by the same 6-3 score Monday night.

MEN'S TENNIS
Grinnell 5, Calvin 4
ORLANDO, FL - Calvin suffered a hard-fought 5-4 defeat to regionally-ranked Grinnell College Wednesday afternoon. The Knights are now 5-2 overall and 2-1 on their spring break trip. Grinnell took an early lead by winning two of the three doubles points. Calvin's lone doubles point came from freshman Philip Reinken (Morton, IL) and sophomore Jon Goorhouse (Holland Christian HS) at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin and Grinnell then split the six singles points with junior Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) winning an impressive 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 match at No. 3 singles, freshman Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH) winning at No. 4 singles and freshman Brian DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) winning at No. 5 singles.
Calvin is back in action on Thursday when it faces Luther College at noon.

BASEBALL
Chicago 7, Calvin 5
ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin baseball team suffered a 7-5 defeat to the University of Chicago in Calvin's spring break finale Wednesday afternoon. Calvin held a lead throughout most of the game but a two-out rally in the ninth inning by Chicago proved to be Calvin's undoing.
Calvin (3-5) will now prepare to host Adrian on Saturday in a twinbill at 1 p.m. in the MIAA opener for both teams.
SOFTBALL
TUCSON, AZ - Calvin suffered a 4-1 loss to Whitworth college lat Wednesday night in the desert. Whitworth (7-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Calvin (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, using two Whitworth errors and a sacrifice hit with senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) scoring the first run of the game.
Whitworth tied the game at one on a home run in the bottom of the second. In the fifth, the Pirates used three hits and three walks to score three runs.
Calvin finished the game with seven hits but left seven runners on base. Calvin had three extra-base hits including doubles from sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) and a triple by freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS).
Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss for Calvin, striking out six batters and walking three in six innings of work.
Calvin also defeated Prairie State Community College 4-2 on Wednesday. The game will not count on Calvin's won-loss record however as it came against a two-year institution.
Calvin is back in action on Thursday when it faces Marian (WI) and Edgewood (WI) in single games.
