SOFTBALL
Calvin 2, Marian (WI) 1
Edgewood 2, Calvin 1
 
TUCSON, AZ - Calvin split a pair of 2-1 game on Wednesday morning, defeating Marian College of Wisconsin and then falling to Edgewood by the same score.
 
In the win over Marian, Calvin scored two runs in third inning, using RBI singles from sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) and freshman Ashley Oosterink (Calvin Christian HS). Marian added a run in the fourth but starter Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) was able to keep Marian scoreless the rest of the way as she picked up her third victory of the season, striking out eight and scattering five hits.
 
Calvin (3-2) mounted a seven-hit attack in the win led by Prins who went 3-for-3 at the plate while junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) went 2-for-3.
 
In the loss to Edgewood, Calvin was unable to overcome a nine-hit Edgewood attack. Edgewood grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Knights came back with a run in the bottom half as sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached on a single, moved to second on an error and scored on a single to center by VanRooyen.
 
Edgewood scored the go-ahead run in the third with using two hits and a walk to grab a 2-1 lead. Calvin had a runner in scoring position in the fifth and seventh but could not deliver the tying run.
 
Mast took the loss for Calvin, striking out seven and walking five. VandenAkker collected two of Calvin's five hits. Freshman Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a double for the Knights.
 
Calvin returns to action on Friday against the same two opponents in Tucson, facing Marian at 9 a.m. (MT) and Edgewood at 11 a.m. (MT).
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Luther 6, Calvin 3
 
ORLANDO, FL - In a matchup of regionally-ranked teams Luther defeated Calvin 6-3. Luther entered the match ranked eighth in the ITA Central Region rankings and 25th nationally while Calvin (8-2) came in ranked 13th in the Central Region.
 
Luther (19-2) took a 2-1 lead with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Calvin's No. 1 doubles team of juniors Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) picked up an 8-3 win over Luther's team of Kelsie Allen and Brynne Zinnecker, ranked 14th in the Central Region doubles rankings.
 
In singles play, Oosterhouse boosted her season record to 12-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over 18th (regionally-ranked) Kelsie Allen. Senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) also picked up a win at No. 4 singles, boosting her singles mark to 8-2.
 
Calvin will now break until next Tuesday when it hosts rival Hope at 4 p.m.

MEN'S TENNIS
Luther 7, Calvin 2
 
ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin men's tennis team suffered its second straight defeat, falling 7-2 to nationally-ranked Luther College. Luther entered the match ranked 27th nationally and seventh in the most recent ITA Central Region rankings.
 
Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles with junior Andrew DeVlieger (Northpointe Christian HS) teaming up freshman Philip Reinken (Morton, IL) for an 8-6 win. In singles play, Calvin's lone point came from senior Roland Eldridge (Charlotte, NC) at No. 3 singles.
 
Calvin returns to action on Friday for a morning match against Oglethorpe University at 9 a.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams are currently completing a week of training in Gulf Shores, Alabama. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik has picked up two final awards for her freshman basketball campaign. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has been named to the Women's Division III News All-Freshman Team. In addition, she has been named a fourth team All-American by Women's Division III News. Last weekend, Verkaik was named the d3hoops.com National Freshman of the Year and a third team All-American by d3hoops.com.

In addition, the final Top 25 polls for women's Division III basketball have been released and Calvin is ranked is ranked in both national polls. The Knights are ranked 22nd in the final ESPN/USA Today Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll and 24th in the final d3hoops.com Top 25 poll of the year.
