SOFTBALL
Calvin 7, Otterbein 2

TUCSON, AZ - It's safe to say that neither Sharon DeKleine or Shelby Mast will
forget Monday's season opener against the Cardinals of Otterbein College. The
contest not only marked the Calvin head coaching debut for DeKleine, but also
the collegiate debut for Mast who graduated from Hudsonville High School last
spring.

In her collegiate debut, Mast tossed a no-hitter in a 7-2 Calvin victory. In
the process, she handed DeKleine her first victory as a head college coach.

In seven innings of work against Otterbein, Mast struck out nine batters and
walked one. She also hit one batter. Both of Otterbein's runs were the result
of Calvin errors with the Knights committing three errors on the afternoon.

Calvin jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third
with freshman Aubree Thompson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) ripping a two-run RBI
single in the inning. In the top of the fourth, Otterbein scored a pair of runs
on two Calvin errors, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. The Knights
answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth and added three more in
the bottom of the sixth on a two-run RBI single by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity
Christian HS) and a sacrifice fly by junior Sass Van Rooyen (Beamsville, ON).

In the process, Mast retired 10 of the final 11 batters she faced with the
only batter not retired reaching base on an error in the top of the seventh.

The no-hitter by Mast is the first by a Calvin pitcher since Rachelle Heyboer
achieved the feat in a victory over Olivet in 2002. The no-hitter for Mast also
comes on the heels of a bout with cancer last spring. For more on Mast's
comeback from cancer, visit the Grand Rapids Press Web site for a well-crafted
story written by Grand Rapids Press Preps sports editor Jane Bos at:

"It was a very exciting win for everyone involved," said DeKleine. "Shelby
pitched a wonderful game and our defense made some fine plays behind her. Our
offense also got going and came up with some key hits. It was a great way to
start the season for our team."

Calvin collected eight hits in the victory including two apiece from Prins and
sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Senior Whisper Miller
(Reed City HS) also had a triple and scored two runs. In addition, freshman
Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Ashley Oosterink (Calvin
Christian HS) belted doubles.

Calvin later faced the University of British Columbia in an afternoon game and
was defeated 9-0. The game will not count on Calvin's won-loss record this year
however as it came against a Canadian opponent.

Calvin returns to play on Tuesday morning in Tucson, facing Ancilla College at
9 a.m. and George Fox University at 11 a.m.

BASEBALL
Grinnell 2, Calvin 1
Calvin 6, Grinnell 4

VERO BEACH, FL – The Calvin baseball team split a doubleheader with Grinnell
College on Monday afternoon, falling in the opener 2-1 and then coming back to
win the nightcap 6-4.

In the opener, Calvin was unable to come up with enough run support to aid
junior Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) who went the distance but suffered the
hard-luck loss.

In the nightcap, Calvin came up with six runs to aid junior Keith Spoelstra
(Oakland, NJ) who picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday morning when it faces Grinnell at 9:30
a.m. in a single nine-inning game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Calvin 6, Colby 3

ORLANDO, FL – The Calvin women’s tennis team improved to 7-1 on the year with

Otterbein Monday afternoon. On Monday night, Calvin defeated Colby College of

ranked 15th in the Northeast region while Calvin came in ranked 13th in the
Central Region.

in the match. Calvin then clinched the win with victories at No. 1, No. 2, No.
3 and No. 4 singles.
