VERO BEACH, FL – The Calvin baseball team picked up its first victory of the
year on Saturday in defeating Western Connecticut State 13-8 in the second game
of a non-conference doubleheader.

In the opener, Calvin (1-3) suffered a 3-1 defeat despite a strong pitching
performance from senior Ben Sietsema (Northpointe Christian HS). Sietsema (0-2)
struck out seven batters in the loss. Sophomore Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) and
senior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) both went 2-for-3 for the Knights in the
loss.

In game two, Calvin cruised behind a strong pitching performance from junior
Peter Steiner (1-0) who went the first five innings and limited Western
Connecticut State to just one run. Calvin led 13-3 through six innings but
Calvin’s bullpen gave up five in the seventh inning to make the game a bit more
interesting.

Sophomore Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Andrew Bosma
(Holland Christian HS) and freshman Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) all had
two hits apiece in the game two win. Berger and Bosma both had triples.

Calvin is back in action on Monday when it faces Grinnell College in a
doubleheader beginning at noon.
