After dropping pair of tough losses on the road at Hope and Olivet, the Knights
got back on track Saturday as they managed to hold of a young and resilient
Trine team and maintain a share of first place with Hope at the top of the
conference standings.
John Mantel led the way for the Knights with 20 points and 13 rebounds, enough
for his 14th career double-double, and Danny Rodts finished close behind with
19 points, hitting on 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
“Today we played really hard and we keep saying it to our guys that we’re going
to get everybody’s best game and we sure did again today,” said Calvin coach
Kevin Vande Streek afterwards. “And I’m glad we came to play hard or otherwise
we wouldn’t have gotten the win.”
“We really wanted to go to John [Mantel] often and we did a great job of that
and he delivered, and Danny [Rodts], when he gets his feet set and shoots that
three there isn’t anyone better,” Vande Streek continued.
The Thunder started strong in the first frame, jumping out to an early 11-5
lead. Calvin came back quickly though and took the lead. The Knights led by as
much as six points as the half wound down, but Trine used an 11-2 run late to
retake the lead and both teams went to the locker rooms with a two-point
Thunder advantage at 35-33.
Calvin came back out and scored six quick points to retake the lead at 39-35
once the second half was underway, and then it was back-and-forth basketball
for the remainder of the game. Calvin would increase its lead by a few points
and then Trine would cut that lead away and remain right on the Knights’ tails.
A pivotal point in the game came with around thirteen minutes to play when
Trine center Alex Croll fouled out of the game. Without Croll, the Thunder were
severely undersized inside and John Mantel made sure to take advantage of that.
Trine got as close as three as time ran down, a 64-61 Calvin lead with under
five minutes to play, but Calvin went and scored nine straight points to seal
the win, five of those points coming from the free throw line.
The game finished as a double-digit 73-63 Calvin win, but it certainly was
hard-fought on both sides. With the win Calvin moves to 8-2 in the MIAA and
Trine falls to 4-5.
More key contributors for the Knights included Matt Veltema who finished with
10 points and Paul Campbell, who had an outstanding game across the board
coming off the bench with 6 points, 6 boards and 3 big blocks on defense.
For the Thunder, freshman Ian Jackson scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed
6 rebounds, freshman Scott Rogers poured in 16, and senior Wes Weir chipped in
an additional 16.
Calvin looks ahead to its game this Wednesday at Adrian, a contest that should
prove to be one of the more difficult conference match-ups of the year for the
Knights. Adrian is a game behind Calvin and Hope in the MIAA standings and look
to get some revenge for the earlier game this year when Calvin beat the
Bulldogs in the Van Noord Arena.
“They’ve made tremendous progress,” Vande Streek said of Adrian. “They have a
new coach and a lot of young guys, and it’ll definitely be a battle come
Wednesday.”
That game is set to kick off at 7:30.

The Calvin men's tennis team kicked off its season on Saturday with a pair of
dual matches inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin opened the day
with a 9-0 victory over Grand Rapids Community College and followed with a 7-2
win over Spring Arbor later Saturday evening.
Calvin's victory over Grand Rapids Community College will not count on its
season record as it did not come against a four-year institution.
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Grand
