Calvin Graduate is Denny's Lead Pitchman in Super Bowl Ad;
Calvin Hockey Team Looks To Bounce Back Weekend Defeats to Saginaw Valley State
 
CALVIN COLLEGE SUPER BOWL CONNECTIONS
 
Kiff Vanden Heuvel, a 1992 Calvin College graduate, made his Super Bowl debut Sunday night.
 
Also a 1988 Grand Rapids South Christian High School graduate, Vanden Heuvel served as the lead pitchman for a series of Denny's ads that appeared throughout the second half of Sunday night's CBS broadcast of the Super Bowl game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. Vanden Heuvel's first ad appeared in the third quarter as he promoted Denny's upcoming free Grand Slam breakfast promotion on February 9. He later did the voiceover for a series of subsequent ads for the Denny's promotion.

A communications, arts and science major at Calvin from 1988 to 1992, Vanden Heuvel was a regular in Calvin's Theatre program while a student. During his Calvin student days, he was also the lead host of Calvin's popular homecoming "Air Band" competition for several years. In March of 1992, he also played a key role in hosting a pep rally for the Calvin men's basketball team prior to its trip to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) for the sectional round of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin continued on to win the sectional and later the NCAA III Championship two weeks later.
 
Vanden Heuvel currently resides in Chicago, Illinois. He is an alumn of the Grand Rapids based River City Improv team and currently serves as an instructor and director in the Chicago-based Second City comedy theatre group in Chicago while also serving as an actor and voice specialist. Vanden Heuvel was not the only Calvin graduate to be involved in the Super Bowl Sunday night as 1995 Calvin College graduate Ian Tigchelaar was present at the game as a member of the New Orleans Saints' front office staff. Like Vanden Heuvel, Tigchelaar is also a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School.

CALVIN ACHA HOCKEY
 
The Calvin ACHA hockey team will look to bounce back from a pair of weekend defeats to Saginaw Valley State University next weekend when it face Davenport in a home-and-away weekend series.
 
This past Friday, Calvin dropped a 9-3 decision to Saginaw Valley State and the fell on Saturday to the Cardinals 7-2. Calvin did recently receive a pair of forfeit victories over Grand Valley State however, bumping Calvin's overall record to 16-6-0-1. Grand Valley State is currently the top-ranked team in the ACHA Division III North Region.
 
In addition, the Calvin hockey team will be holding a fundraiser on Monday, February 15 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Russ' Restaurant in Kentwood. That night, the Calvin team will serving and bussing tables in the back section of Russ' Restaraunt. A portion of the night's revenue, plus donations, will help support the Calvin hockey team.
