Greg Snapper Named MIAA Most Valuable Player in Men's Soccer - Calvin Players
Receive All-MIAA Honors
MEN'S SOCCER
For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Greg Snapper has been
named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player in men's soccer. In addition, Calvin
College senior Michael Holwerda has been named the recipient of the prestigious
Dr. Marvin Zuidema Award.
The Zuidema Award honors Dr. Marvin Zuidema, longtime men's soccer coach and
athletic administrator at Calvin College. The recipient is to be a senior
selected for his contributions to team play, leadership qualities,
demonstration of ethical virtues and excellence in athletics and academics.
Holwerda is the third player from Calvin to receive the honor and the second
from his family as his older brother David Holwerda was selected for the award
in 2006.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Michael Holwerda has been a four-year member of the Calvin men's soccer
program. Holwerda has career totals of 23 goals, 18 assists and 65 points. He
also has 11 game-winning goals in his career. Holwerda carries a double-major
of religion and psychology. He has been a regular member of the Calvin Dean’s
List and is a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. This fall, he
was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team. He was
named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second team in 2008. A 5th
year senior at calvin, Holwerda is also currently taking a few courses at
Calvin seminary. He will graduate in December and in January, will be moving
to Akron, Ohio to work at a local church while continuing courses at a seminary
nearby.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Snapper anchored a Calvin defense that posted
eight shutouts in MIAA play this fall. Snapper is the fifth individual in
Calvin men's soccer history to be named MIAA MVP twice, joining Tom Van
Tongeren, Mark Recker, Doug DeSmit and Joel Veldhouse to have done so. Earlier
this fall, Snapper was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth
time in his career.
Snapper is also one of four Calvin players named to the All-MIAA first team as
seniors Luke Holtrop and Alex McKenzie and junior Dan Kmetz have also been
selected. Snapper is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the third time
while Holtrop is doing so for the second time. Kmetz and McKenzie are receiving
All-MIAA first accolades for the first time.
Holtrop is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School.
A midfielder, Holtrop has 11 goals and nine assists during his career. Of his
11 career goals, four have been game-winners including two this year.
McKenzie is from Lindenhurst, Illinois. He is a graduate of Antioch High
School. McKenzie currently leads Calvin in scoring with seven goals, five
assists and 19 points. Earlier this year, he received MIAA Offensive Player of
the Week honors. In conference play, McKenzie tallied 16 points this fall to
rank second on the MIAA list.
Kmetz is from Strongsville, Ohio. He is a graduate of Strongsville High
School. A center midfielder, Kmetz has recorded four goals and five assists
this fall for the Knights. Of his four goals, three have been game-winners
including a critical goal with seven minutes left in regulation in a
late-season 3-2 win at Trine that kept Calvin's MIAA title hopes alive.
Calvin has also landed three players on the All-MIAA second team. Named to the
All-MIAA second team from Calvin are juniors Scott Hooker and Lucas Wilgenburg
and freshman Dan Nederhoed.
Hooker is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School.
Hooker has five goals, two assists and 12 points this fall. Wilgenburg and
Nederhoed are starters on Calvin's defensive backline. Nederhoed is from
Kentwood and is a graduate of East Kentwood High School. Wilgenburg is from
Visalia, California. He is a graduate of Central Valley Christian High School.
Wilgenburg has also contributed to Calvin's offensive attack this fall, scoring
three goals along while picking up one assist for seven points.
Calvin is currently 15-4-1 overall and will participate in the NCAA III
Tournament this Friday when it faces longtime non-conference rival Wheaton (IL)
at Wheaton in a game scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. (EST).
