The 2009-2010 men’s basketball season got underway for the Knights Tuesday
night in an exhibition game against fellow west Michigan rival Ferris State
University, a Division II team from Big Rapids. Calvin stayed competitive into
the second half before the Bulldogs turned on the heat, rolling to an eventual
88-68 win.

Calvin came out strong on the tip-off, scoring six unanswered points in the
first few minutes of play. Ferris State would retaliate and take the lead
before Calvin senior Matt Veltema scored seven straight points for the Knights,
cutting the deficit to 21-20. Before halftime the score was knotted at 36, but
then the Bulldogs knocked down a couple buckets to take a 40-36 lead into
halftime.

Senior and preseason All-American John Mantel only played eight of twenty
first half minutes due to a couple of early personal fouls, an occurrence that
prompted Coach Vande Streek to take out his star center.

Fellow senior Matt Veltema took the reins to the offense in Mantel’s
absence, scoring 14 points in the first half of play. As a team, the Knights
were shooting 28 percent from the floor, hitting on only 9 of 32 shots. Ferris
State shot 43 percent, knocking down 17 shots out of 39 attempts.

In the second half the Bulldogs maintained their lead, but after junior Danny
Rodts scored five straight points for the Knights, the lead was cut to one at
42-41. Mantel got his third foul of the night very quickly into the second
frame, causing him to lose minutes yet again.

The Knights were able to close another small gap with about ten minutes left
in the game, getting within a point of Ferris State yet again with a 52-51
Bulldog lead. Ferris would then put on the afterburners, going on a 10-2 run
that left Calvin in the dust. With a 62-53 lead, the Bulldogs would continue
to pour on the scoring and win the game by an eventual twenty point lead.

Ferris State finished with five players having double digit points, and as a
team the Bulldogs shot 57 percent in the second half, averaging their overall
game shooting percentage at 50. The Knights would finish with a 29 percent
overall shooting percentage.

Matt Veltema led the team with 19 points and also co-led the Knights in
rebounds with 8. Mantel finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds after scoring
all ten of his points in the second half. Rodts finished second behind Veltema
in points with 7, hitting on 2 of only 4 attempted shots with both of his makes
being three pointers.
