Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors;
Start Times/Ticket Prices Set for NCAA III Tournament Events
MEN'S SOCCER
For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior striker
Brad Heethuis has been named the MIAA's Offensive Player of the Week. A native
of Jenison and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian high School, Heethuis
scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Hope on Saturday that
clinched the outright MIAA title for the Knights. The goal, scored just 6:04
into the match, was the fourth of the year for Heethuis who now has three
game-winning goals to his credit this fall. Heethuis currently ranks third on
the Calvin team in scoring with 13 points on the strength of four goals and
five assists.
In winning its third consecutive MIAA title this past Saturday, Calvin
(15-4-1) clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament this weekend. The
Knights will open NCAA III Tournament play on Friday at 8:00 p.m. (EST) when
they face host Wheaton (IL) in a first round NCAA III Tournament match.
VOLLEYBALL
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin middle
blocker Lizzie Kamp its Player of the Week and Calvin libero Kelsey Sears its
Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through November
7.
Kamp, a freshman from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 38 kills
for an average of 3.45 per game for the week in leading the Knights to the MIAA
tournament title. She had 14 kills in a first-round match against Saint
Mary’s and 13 kills in the championship match against Hope. Kamp added 19
digs, including 11 against Hope, and 10 blocks. She is being honored as Player
of the Week for the first time in her career.
Sears, a senior from Traverse City (West HS), led Calvin in digs for the MIAA
tournament with 71, averaging 6.45 digs per game. She had 28 digs in the
championship match against Hope and 27 against Saint Mary’s. Sears is being
honored as Specialty Player of the Week for the second time this season and the
fourth time in her career.
The Calvin volleyball team is currently 27-6 overall and will compete in NCAA
III Tournament play this Thursday when it faces Wittenberg in a first round
match Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Hope College.
NCAA III TOURNAMENT TIMES/TICKET PRICES SET
The Calvin women's soccer team will host a four-team regional this Friday and
Saturday at Calvin's Zuidema Field. The Knights will welcome teams from
Wittenberg, Ohio Northern and Washington and Jefferson (PA). Friday's action
will pit Ohio Northern (15-4-1) up against Wittenberg (11-4-5) in an 11:00 a.m.
game followed by a game between Calvin (13-4-1) against Washington and
Jefferson (12-6-2) at 1:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $6.00 for general admission,
$3.00 for students, senior citizens and members of the military and $2.00 for
children ages 3-12.
The women's volleyball team will open NCAA III Tournament play on Thursday at
Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse against Wittenberg University at 5:30 p.m. In other
first round matches, Heidelberg will face North Central at 12:30 p.m., Bluffton
will face Ohio Northern at 3:00 p.m. and Hope will face Lakeland at 8:00 p.m.
In men's soccer, Calvin will be part of a four-team regional tournament at
Wheaton (IL). Friday's first round action will pit the University of Chicago up
against Wartburg at 6:00 p.m. (EST) with a game between Calvin and host Wheaton
set to follow at 8:00 p.m. (EST).
