CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 5, 2009

Men's Golf Shatters Course Record at MIAA Jamboree;
Lucas Wilgenburg Named MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

MEN'S GOLF

CASCADE -- The Calvin men's golf team used home course advantage to its
advantage, firing a first place and course record score of 294 strokes Monday
afternoon at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by the Knights at the Watermark Country
Club.

The team score shattered the previous course record of 301 set by Olivet in
2005.

It also marks the first time Calvin has placed first place at an MIAA Jamboree
since 2002 when the Knights also won at the Watermark Country Club.

With the finish on Monday, Calvin has widened its lead on second place in the
overall MIAA standings, moving 14 strokes ahead of third place Trine. Trine
trailed Calvin by just one stroke heading into Monday's competition. The
Knights still trail Hope by 14 strokes in the overall standings however.

An individual course record was also set on Monday by Trine's Andy Wolf who
fired a 70 with a front nine of 36 and a back nine of 34. Calvin junior Jess
Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Calvin senior Jon
Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were right behind Wolf with
Hendriksma carding a score of 71 (37-34) and Kuiper a 72 (35-37). Kuiper and
Wolf were in the same playing group on Monday.

Rounding out Calvin's finishers on Monday were junior Eric Doezema (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 75 (40-35), freshman Dave Sarkipato
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) with a 76 and freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 76. Doezema's score was good for a tie
for seventh place while Sakipato and Ben Kuiper tied for 10th place
individually.

Two league jamborees remain on the schedule with the Knights scheduled to
compete at a league jamboree hosted by Albion on Thursday at the Medalist Golf
Club in Marshall and then returning to Holland a week from Monday to compete at
a league jamboree at the Wuskowhan Golf Club. The jamboree at Wuskowhan will
serve as a makeup date as the original competition was rained out last week.

MEN'S SOCCER

For the second time in his career, Calvin College junior Lucas Wilgenburg has
been named the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Wilgenburg, a junior from Visalia, Calif. (Central Valley Christian HS),
backstopped the Calvin defense with his marking and heading skills as the
Knights posted back-to-back shutouts, blanking Olivet, 1-0, and Albion, 5-0.
With Wilgenburg playing a key role, Calvin has been unscored upon in its first
four MIAA games and has allowed just two goals in 10 games this season.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4:00 p.m. at
Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
