Calvin 5 – Olivet 0
(written by Calvin Sports information student assistant Derek Niece)

The rain that started coming down early in the first half of Saturday’s game
didn’t stop the Knights of Calvin College as they rolled to a convincing 5-0
victory over their MIAA counterpart Olivet College, out-shooting the Comets
28-2 over the course of the game.

Starting out as a relatively sunny day at Calvin’s Zuidema field, the
weather soon took a turn for the worst as rain began to fall off and on for
most of the game. But the Knights would not be fazed as they started the goal
scoring early with two quick goals from junior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton,
IN). Both goals occurred in the first fifteen minutes of play.

Coach Recker said of Schnabel, “That’s really the typical kind of player
as a coach that I’m looking for when I recruit. She got two great
opportunities and in both situations she struck the ball extremely well and
made great decisions.”

Both of Schabel’s goals came as a result of excellent help too. The first
was scored after a beautiful textbook example of the give and go. Schnabel
carried the ball down the wing, passed it off to junior forward Carly Prins
(Hudsonville, MI), and received the return pass in the box with plenty of space
to strike it home. The second goal, only four minutes later, happened because
of aggressive play from junior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake, MI), who deflected
an attempted clearance right to Schabel on the corner of the six yard box.

Emily Ottenhoff (Palos Heights, IL) added a third goal right before halftime
off of a free kick where the ball went through a crowd of players untouched
into the corner of the net. The Comets did not register a single shot in the
first half.

In the second half the offense continued when freshman Katie Pranger (Denver,
CO) knocked in the first goal of her collegiate career off of a double assist
from junior Kellie Honderd (Hudsonville, MI) and Ottenhoff. Freshman Liz
Cancel (Fraser, MI) then put the game well out of reach in the 77th minute of
play with a beautiful strike that found the net, her third goal in the past two
games.

But despite the strong offensive performance that Calvin put out Saturday, the
story of the game was definitely in the defense. The Knights controlled
possession all game, hardly ever letting Olivet take the ball into Calvin’s
half of the field. Recker was especially pleased with the performance of his
back line.

“We have some real committed players that have really taken to heart some of
the demands of the game and the challenges that we ask them to play
against.”

The defense for Calvin held the Comets to just two shots all game, and both of
those had virtually no chance of getting past senior keeper Kayla Sulzer (St.
Charles, MO)

Recker added, “They really take pride together as a unit in reducing the
total amount of shots that our goal keeper has to deal with.”

The Knights return to action on Tuesday October 6th with an away game at St.
Mary’s before coming back home to host Kalamazoo on October 10th.
