Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Compete at Notre Dame/Adrian Short &
Long Course Championships

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, IN/ADRIAN, MI – The 10th-ranked Calvin men’s cross country
team placed 10th in the 8K Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational with
249 points. Top-ranked North Central (Division III) took first place with 46
points, edging third-ranked (Division II) Grand Valley State by six points for
the win.

Calvin was paced by sophomore Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) led
the Knights with an 18th place time of 25:26. Kramer was seventh among Division
III competitors in the race.

Calvin’s next finisher was senior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee
Lutheran HS) in 48th place with a time of 25:59 followed by junior Alex Wrobel
(Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS) in 52nd place with a time of 26:06. Senior
Kyle Mast (Zeeland/Holland Christian HS) was Calvin’s fourth finish, placing
68th (26:25) while senior Ben Van Wyk (Sussex, NJ/High Point HS) was 76th
(26:28), sophomore Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) 77th (26:30), freshman Matt
Vander Roest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) 79th (26:32), junior Jake
Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) 82nd 26:34 and senior George
Visser (Winfield, IL/West Chicago HS) 92nd 26:43.

In the men’s junior varsity race, freshman David Vande Bunte (Byron
Center/Byron Center HS) was 27th (27:04) while sophomore Ben Lewis (South
Haven/South Haven HS) was 32nd (27:21).

In the meantime, a split squad of Calvin runners competed at the Adrian
College Short and Long Course Championships held at Lenawee Christian High
School.

In the men’s short course (5K) race, Calvin was second with 36 points, one
point behind Adrian. Calvin’s top finisher was freshman Greg Whittle
(Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) with a third place time of 16:55. Also cracking
the top 10 were junior Jake Baker (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids South Christian
HS) in fourth (16:57), freshman Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich
HS) in seventh (17:00) and freshman Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) in 10th (17:12).

In the men’s long course (8K) race, Calvin did not have enough runners to
post a team score but did receive a fifth place finish from freshman Gabe
Gunnink (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in a time of 28:03.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts the Michigan
Intercollegiates at the Gainey Athletic Complex at 4:00 p.m. The Michigan
Intercollegiates will include Division I, II and III schools as well as NAIA
institutions from around the state of Michigan.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

NOTRE DAME, IN/ADRIAN, MI – The top-ranked (Division III) Calvin women’s
cross country team produced a third place team finish in the (5K) Gold Division
of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon, recording a team score of 119
points. Second-ranked (Division II) Grand Valley State took first place with 48
points while Division I Dayton took second with 104 points. Eighth-ranked
Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the second-best Division III school, placing seventh with
190 points.

Calvin’s top finisher was senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) was seventh in a time of 17:57. Koster was the second Division
III finisher in the race with Wisconsin-Oshkosh senior Ayla Mitchell winning
the race with a time of 17:31. At the 2008 NCAA III Cross Country
Championships, Mitchell placed third individually.

Calvin placed five runners inside the top 30 with sophomore Jodi Hoekstra
(Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) placing 26th (18:37), junior Gretchen
Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) placing 27th (18:37), junior Alison Tuuk
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing 29th (18:39) and senior Liz
Smit (Kirkland, WA/Bellevue Christian HS) finishing 30th (18:40).

Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester,
MN/Century HS) in 40th (18:54), sophomore Rebecca Hiemstra (Dusseldorf,
Germany/International School of Dusseldorf) in 43rd (18:57), senior Nicole Farr
(Wheaton, IL/Warrenville-South HS) in 49th (19:00) and sophomore Samantha
Westveer (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) in 66th (19:12).

In the women’s (5K) JV race, senior Mary Tolsma (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern
Christian HS) was 15th (19:04), freshman Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS) 18th (19:14) and junior Andrea Beukema (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS) 23rd (19:43).

Meanwhile, another group of Calvin runners competed at the Adrian Long and
Short Course Championships at Lenawee Christian High School.

Calvin took first place in both (3K and 6K) races, posting a team score of 37
points on the long course race and a score of 29 points in the short course
race.

In the 6K race, Calvin placed five runners in the top 11 led by junior
Elizabeth Feenstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in fourth (25:22)
and freshman Hannah Kregel (Iowa City, IA/Iowa City HS) in fifth (25:24).
Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore Sarah Onrdorff (Huron,
OH/Huron HS) in seventh (25:36), sophomore Kristin Van Kampen (Elmhurst,
IL/Timothy Christian HS) in 10th (26:21) and junior Anna VanWyk (Dorr/South
Christian HS) in 11th (26:26).

In the 3K race, sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) took
first place honors in a time of 11:29. The rest of Calvin’s finishers
included sophomore Eva Kort (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty HS) in fourth
(12:01), sophomore Sarah Fennema (Brookfield, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) in
fifth (12:01), freshman Christine Hartley (Pewaukee, WI/Lake Country HS) in
eighth (12:16) and freshman Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) in 11th
(12:34).
